Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is one of the most important cellulose derivatives and used in the fields of food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and paint. Fibrous CMC is used an antiadhesive material to prevent postoperative wound adhesions. The degree of substitution and distribution of the substituent (i.e., the carboxymethyl group) are the most important parameters for the function of CMC. Thus, CMC used for antiadhesive material must be carefully evaluated, because the CMC product is retained in patients' bodies over the long term. Although identification tests of CMC are defined in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, it is di‹cult to evaluate its structure using those tests. In the present study, we propose improved methods for evaluating CMC products by analyzing monosaccharides after hydrolysis. © 2014 The Pharmaceutical Society of Japan.

A number of recent reports have highlighted the usefulness of laparoscopic surgery for pancreatic surgery; however, the procedure is not yet standard because of its technical challenges. Using an endoscopic surgical spacer (SECUREA™) that we developed, we performed laparoscopic enucleation of a pancreatic tumor in a patient with pancreatic mucinous cystadenoma. The SECUREA is a polyurethane sponge with a radiopaque marker. It is elliptic-cylindrical and measures 6.5 em on the major axis, 3.5 em on the minor axis, and 2 cm in height. Herein, we report the intraoperative findings and examine the usefulness of SECUREA for laparoscopic enucleation. The spacer was introduced into the abdominal cavity through a 12-mm trocar, and was grasped with forceps to isolate or extend organs and tissues, thereby ensuring a safe and relatively uncontaminated surgical field. In addition, the high absorptiveness and water-holding capacity of the sponge facilitated removal of exudate, which created a clearer operative field and reduced the technical challenges of drainage manipulation. Indeed, replacement of the sponge was unnecessary because it returned to its original state after the liquid it contained had been aspirated. Our findings suggest that the SECUREA increases safety and reduces the technical difficulties of laparoscopic enucleation.

The CMC structure of the present invention is substantially composed of carboxymethyl celluloses, comprising an acid carboxymethyl cellulose and an alkaline metal carboxymethyl cellulose in a mixed state. The method of production of the present invention comprises subjecting the alkaline metal (or acid) carboxymethyl cellulose structure to an acid (or alkali) treatment, wherein the acid (or alkali) treatment is terminated before the alkaline metal (or acid) carboxymethyl cellulose is fully converted to the acid (or alkaline metal) carboxymethyl cellulose.

The disclosed is a novel indicator for plasma sterilization which utilizes an azo dye which has been known and used for preparing indicator for ethylene oxide gas sterilization and indicator for heat sterilization, and which exhibits a quick change of color upon the cold plasma sterilization process with using a oxidizing gas such as hydrogen peroxide, the change of color being indicated as a clear change of the color tone. The azo dye which has been known and used for preparing indicator for ethylene oxide gas sterilization and indicator for heat sterilization is used in combination with a compound containing a mercapto group or a dithiocarbamyl group therein as the compound capable of reacting with the azo dye upon the plasma sterilization treatment, and thereby bringing discoloration into the azo dye. Moreover, in combination with them, a polyhydric phenol compound or an aromatic carboxylic acid may be further used as antifading agent for discolored azo dye which is produced during the plasma sterilization process in order to stabilize the occurrence of discoloration.
