To investigate the anatomic characteristics of splenic flexure, surgical techniques, and oncologic outcomes in 52 patients with non-obstructive splenic flexure colon cancer. Clinical data of 52 patients with non-obstructive splenic flexure colon cancer from March 2004 to March 2011 in the Department of General Surgery at the Henan Province Tumor Hospital were analyzed retrospectively. There were 37 patients of regular type, 5 of mobile type, and 10 of adhesive type. All the patients received radical operation. Eighteen patients received pre-small intestine anastomosis, including 12 cases with regular type, 4 with mobile type, and 2 with adhesive type. The difference in pre-small intestine anastomosis among the three types was not statistically significant(P=0.062). In addition, 32 cases received retro-ileum anastomosis. There were no significant differences in operative time, intraoperative blood loss, number of lymph node dissection and positive lymph node, and postoperation complication rate among the three types. Follow up was available in all the cases. Five-year survival rates of cases with regular type, mobile type and adhesive type were 62.5%, 59.2% and 58.7% respectively(P>0.05). Radical resection can provide satisfactory survival for splenic flexure colon cancer patients. The anatomy of splenic flexure does not affect the type of anastomosis. Retro-ileum anastomosis is a simple and effective method for reconstruction after radical resection of the tumor. Source

Aim: To investigate the relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and concurrent esophagus and gastric cardia cancer from the same patient (CC) and examine the significance of P16 INK4A protein expression. Methods: Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the presence of HPV type16 (HPV16). The expression of P16 INK4A protein was detected using immunohistochemistry. Results: Among the CC specimens, HPV16-DNA was found in eight cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and five cases of gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA), respectively (47% vs 29%), and two of both ESCC and GCA. P16 INK4A was highly expressed in both ESCC and GCA. In the HPV-associated positive CC, higher P16 INK4A expression was observed in the GCA than in the ESCC (75% vs 25%, P < 0.05). Conclusion: HPV16 as a correlated risk factor may play an important role in the development of ESCC and GCA. P16 INK4A may be a screening index in the HPVassociated carcinoma of gastric cardia. © 2010 Baishideng. Source

A disintegrin and metalloprotease with trombospondin motifs (ADAMTS) is a family of proteins characterized by the presence of a metalloproteinase domain linked to a variety of specialized ancillary domains. ADAMTS18 is a putative tumor suppressive gene related to nasopharyngeal carcinoma. We used high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis to detect the methylation levels of ADAMTS18 gene in 100 gastric cancers, 100 colorectal cancers, 70 pancreatic cancers, and equal number of adjacent normal tissues. The frequency of ADAMTS18 methylation in all three types of cancers was significantly higher than that in normal tissues. Expression levels of ADAMTS18 were inversely correlated with methylation levels. No significant association was found between ADAMTS18 methylation status and TNM staging in the cancers. In summary, epigenetic regulation of ADAMTS18 was associated with carcinogenesis. The application of HRM analysis is a fast and high-throughput way to investigate the epigenetic status of ADAMTS18. © 2009 Humana Press Inc. Source

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential pro-inflammatory role of the cytokine interleukin (IL-18) in oral lichen planus (OLP) so as to provide a reliable and early indicator for the diagnosis of OLP. One hundred three ethnic Chinese patients with OLP were enrolled in this study, as were 48 age- and sex-matched controls. IL-18 concentrations in serum and saliva were screened by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The protein content was expressed as picograms per milliliter. OLP patients showed a high-level of IL-18 expression profile in serum compared with the control group (OLP=21.32±8. 26 pg/mL, control=12.29±5.11 pg/mL, P<0.05), and the saliva partner had significantly higher concentrations of IL-18 compared to the control (OLP=20.12±5.78 pg/mL, control=15.60±4.17 pg/mL, P<0.05). In patients with OLP, serum and salivary IL-18 are elevated, correlating with the severity of illness. These findings may be considered to improve the predictive or prognostic values of inflammatory cytokines for OLP and also to design possible novel therapeutic approaches. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the expression of Survivin and P-glycoproteinand (P-gp) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the efficacy of chemotherapy using Paclitaxel, and further study the efficacy of paclitaxel and matrine combined chemotherapy. METHODS: Totally 120 patients with NSCLC were divided into double positive group, single positive group and double negative group according to the expression of survivin and P-gp measured by immunohistochemical method. Each group was randomly divided into two groups: patients in group A were treated with PTX and DDP or carboplatin. Patients in group B were given matrine combined with the same chemotherapy. The progression-free Survival rates (PFS) and overall Survival (OS) were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method. The response rate (RR) was assessed by χ2 test. RESULTS: In all 120 patients, 63 patients (52.5%) were high level of Survivin, and 42 patients (35.0%) were high level of P-gp. The expression of surviving was related to pathological type (P=0.026). Group A: In three different expression groups-double-positive group, single-positive group and double-negative group, RR was 23.1%(3/13), 57.7%(15/26) and 71.4%(15/21), respectively. PFS was 1.86 months, 3.34 months and 4.32 months, respectively. OS was 7.43 months, 10.91 months and 11.37 months, respectively. Between three different expression groups, the difference of RR, PFS and OS was significant (P value were 0.021, 0.009 and 0.006, respectively). Compare with group A, the RR was improved by using matrine. Especially in double positive group, the RR was improved, but the difference was not significant (P=0.072; χ2=3.232). PFS in single-positive group with matrine was longer than that in other groups (P=0.030). CONCLUSIONS: The expression of Survivin and P-gp in NSCLC may be a valuable marker to predict the efficacy of chemotherapy of Pacilitaxel. The RR and PFS in patients may be improved by using matrine combined chemotherapy. Source
