Objective: To observe the effect of Governor Vessel-unblocking and mind-calming acupuncture on insomnia and further develop the academic idea on Gao’s lineage acupuncture. Methods: A total of 68 insomnia cases were randomly allocated into an acupuncture group (n=34) and a medication group (n=34) according to their sequences of consultation. Patients in the acupuncture group received acupuncture treatment once a day, 5 d a week, for 4 weeks. Patients in the medication group took 1 mg of Estazolam before sleep for each dose, one dose a day, for 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, the sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and the efficacy was assessed using the PSQI reductive rate. Results: After treatment, the global PSQI score and scores of each component in the acupuncture group were significantly decreased (all P<0.01). The global PSQI score in the medication group was significantly decreased (P<0.01). Except for sleep disturbance, scores of the rest of components were significantly decreased (P<0.01 or P<0.05). The between-group difference was statistically significant in global PSQI score (P<0.01). Except for sleep latency and duration, scores of the sleep quality, efficiency, disturbance and daytime dysfunction in the acupuncture group were significantly lower than those in the medication group (all P<0.05). In addition, the recovery and marked effect rate in the acupuncture group was significantly higher than that in the medication group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The Governor Vessel-unblocking and mind-calming acupuncture is safe, reliable for insomnia and has better efficacy than Estazolam. © 2016, Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Governor Vessel-regulating and brain-unblocking acupuncture on post-stroke depression. Methods: A total of 70 eligible cases were randomly allocated into an observation group and a control group according to the random number table. Patients in the observation group were treated with Governor Vessel-regulating and brain-unblocking acupuncture, whereas patients in the control group were treated with oral Escitalopram Oxalate tablet. The treatment lasted for 8 weeks. The Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), Montgomery Asberg depression rating scale (MADRS), and Barthel Index (BI) were used to evaluate the patients’ condition before, 4 weeks and 8 weeks after treatment respectively. In addition, adverse reactions were also recorded. Results: After 4 weeks of treatment, the HAMD and MADRS scores were significantly decreased in both groups (P<0.05); and the BI scores were significantly increased in both groups (P<0.05). There was no between-group statistical difference in HAMD score (P>0.05); the MADRS score in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05) and the BI score in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). After 8 weeks of treatment, there were no between-group statistical differences in all aspects (P>0.05); however, the adverse reactions in the observation group were significantly less than those in the control group. Conclusion: The Governor Vessel-regulating and brain-unblocking acupuncture is safe and effective for post-stroke depression and can obtain similar efficacy as Escitalopram Oxalate tablet. In addition, it can fast alleviate core symptoms of depression and improve the activities of daily living (ADL) and has fewer adverse reactions. © 2016, Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

To observe the effect of Huazhuojiedu medicated serum on the proliferation and activation of hepatic stellate cells, as well as the expression of PI3K and p-Akt in rats, and to explore the underlying mechanism of Huazhuojiedu prescription against hepatic fibrosis. Hepatic stellate cells harvested from rats were resuscitated and subcultured, followed by the intervention of Huazhuojiedu equivalent dose, Huazhuojiedu double dose, and positive drug (Compound Biejiaruangan Troche) medicated serum of rats. After in vitro culture, hepatic stellate cells were stimulated with 5 ng/mL transforming growth factor-β1. At 24, 48, 72 hours, the proliferation of hepatic stellate cells was detected with MTT assay; at 48 hours, α-SMA mRNA and protein expression in hepatic stellate cells were determined with RT-PCR assay and western blot analysis, respectively, to evaluate the activation of hepatic stellate cells; in addition, PI3K and p-Akt protein expression levels were also assayed with western blot analysis at 48 hours. The results showed that, 24-hour transforming growth factor-β1 stimulation significantly promoted the proliferation of hepatic stellate cells (P < 0.01). Each medicated serum inhibited the proliferation of hepatic stellate cells (P < 0.01). Huazhuojiedu equivalent dose had the similar inhibition effect with positive drug (P > 0.05), and Huazhuojiedu double dose achieved more apparent inhibition effect (P < 0.01). After 48 and 72 hours of transforming growth factor-β1 stimulation, hepatic stellate cells still proliferated significantly (P < 0.01), which was inhibited by each medicated serum (P < 0.01). Huazhuojiedu equivalent dose showed a weaker inhibition effect than positive drug (P < 0.05), and Huazhuojiedu double dose exerted a strong inhibition effect (P < 0.05). After hepatic stellate cells were stimulated with transforming growth factor-β1 for 48 hours, the expression of α-SMA mRNA and protein in hepatic stellate cells was significantly increased (P < 0.01); the medicated serums significantly down-regulated α-SMA mRNA and protein expression, and inhibited the activation of hepatic stellate cells (P < 0.01). Huazhuojiedu equivalent dose showed the similar inhibition effect with positive drug (P > 0.05), and Huazhuojiedu double dose exerted a significant inhibition effect (P < 0.05), which was stronger than Huazhuojiedu equivalent dose (P < 0.05). After hepatic stellate cells were stimulated with transforming growth factor-β1 for 48 hours, PI3K and p-Akt protein expression levels were increased (P < 0.05); each medicated serum down-regulated the elevated expression levels of PI3K and p-Akt (P < 0.05). Huazhuojiedu equivalent dose had the similar down-regulation effect with positive drug (P > 0.05), and Huazhuojiedu double dose achieved more apparent inhibition effect on PI3K expression (P < 0.05). Huazhuojiedu double dose significantly decreased the PI3K and p-Akt protein expression compared with Huazhuojiedu equivalent dose (P < 0.05). Huazhuojiedu medicated serum inhibits the proliferation and activation of hepatic stellate cells induced by transforming growth factor-β1 in vitro, reduces the expression of PI3K and p-Akt protein, and the mechanisms of preventing hepatic fibrosis is mediated by the intervention on PI3K/Akt pathway. © 2014, E-Century Publishing Corporation. Introduction Abri Herba has remarkable properties, such as cleanup heat detoxification, dampness and activating blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis; as a result, it has been applied to treat acute or chronic hepatitis and mastitis. Abri mollis Herba is often used as Abri Herba. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was applied to compare the similarities and differences of the chemical compositions in the two types of medicinal materials. Objective To establish a high-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method for the simultaneous analysis of 15 flavonoids, two phenolic acids and three alkaloids in Abri Herba and Abri mollis Herba. Methodology The chromatographic separation was performed on a C18 column with a mobile phase of methanol (A), acetonitrile (B) and 0.5‰ acetic acid in water (C) using gradient elution. The detection of the target compounds was performed in multiple-reaction monitoring (MRM) mode using a hybrid quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometer equipped with positive/negative ion-switching electrospray ionisation (ESI) source. Results The developed method is reliable, sensitive and specific. In addition, the method has been successfully applied to differentiate 15 batches of Abri Herba and 27 batches of Abri mollis Herba stems. Furthermore, a comparison of the contents among stems, roots and leaves from the same strain in seven batches of Abri mollis Herba and four batches of Abri Herba has also been performed. Conclusion HPLC-MS/MS method is sensitive and selective and can be suitable for the reliable quality control of Abri mollis Herba and Abri Herba. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Over the past decades, many Chinese scholars agree that the relationship between formula and syndrome is a very important direction of TCM theoretical and clinical research, and considerable progress has been achieved in the research of the theory of correspondence between formula and syndrome. Syndrome differentiationbased treatment is the core content of TCM theory, and the correspondence between formula and syndrome is the important link between syndrome differentiation and treatment. A syndrome corresponds to a formula, and a formula also corresponds to a syndrome. The theory of correspondence between formula and syndrome has become the premise of clinical treatment. A sensitive and selective liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of four flavonoids (schaftoside, isovitexin, luteolin, and apigenin) and one phenolic acid (ferulic acid) in rat plasma using sulfamethoxazole as the internal standard (IS). The separation was performed using a Diamonsil C18 column, which was eluted with methanol (A) and 0.1 acetic acid (B). The gradient condition was as follows: 0-5min, 40-60% A; 5-6min, 60-95% A; and 6-10min, maintained at 95% A. The analytes were detected using a hybrid quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometer that was equipped with an electrospray ionization source in the negative ion and multiple-reaction monitoring modes. A full validation of the method was performed. The linearity of the analytical response was good, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9925 for all of the compounds within the concentration range. The lower limits of quantitation (LLOQ) of schaftoside, isovitexin, luteolin, apigenin, and ferulic acid in rat plasma were 1.66, 0.84, 3.69, 1.70, and 3.91ng/mL, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precisions of the investigated components exhibited an RSD within 13.20%, and the accuracy (RE%) ranged from -8.47% to 10.90%. The results indicated that the developed method is sufficiently reliable for the pharmacokinetic study of schaftoside, isovitexin, apigenin, luteolin, and ferulic acid in rats following oral administration of the Herba Desmodii Styracifolii extract. © 2013.

To study the medication regularity of Huazhuo Jiedu Formula in treating the chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), and to explore the stable relationship of correspondence between Huazhuo Jiedu Formula and the pattern of internal accumulation of zhuodu. Statistical analysis was conducted among 200 cases of CAG, whose case histories included their gender, age, electronic gastroscope, pathological results, clinical symptoms, and prescriptions of Chinese materia medica. On the basis of "golden section method", the association rule between drugs and syndromes was investigated using frequency statistic method and association rule analysis. Through data processing, 153 kinds of Chinese herbal decoction were obtained. According to the principle of "golden section method", 15 kinds of Chinese herbal decoction, whose frequency of use was over 61.8% (including 61.8%), were used as the therapeutical core drugs of pattern of internal accumulation of zhuodu in CAG. Ten kinds of clinical symptoms, which had the high ocurrence rate, were the main symptoms of the pattern of internal accumulation of zhuodu in CAG. According to association rules analysis, it was found that there was a strong correlation between drugs and pulses, which explained the high degree of correspondence of prescription and syndromes between the pattern of internal accumulation of zhuodu in CAG and Huazhuo Jiedu Decoction. It can be seen that there exists a relationship of correspondence between Huazhuo Jiedu Formula and the pattern of internal accumulation of zhuodu in CAG. And it shows that the key pathogenesis of CAG is internal accumulation of zhuodu, and the corresponding treatment is Huazhuo Jiedu Method. ©, 2014, Editorial Office of Chinese Traditional and Herbal Drugs. AIM: To discuss the experience in the treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) using the Traditional Chinese Medicine’s principle of resolving turbidity and removing toxin. METHODS: Effective prescriptions concerning the treatment of CAG with internal accumulation of turbid toxin as syndrome pattern were collected, and frequency sorting was exercised to the herbs, which would undergo hierarchical cluster analysis if their frequency was greater than 30, with the application of SPSS18.0 software. RESULTS: A total of 252 prescriptions met the inclusive criteria, involving 186 herbs and 6141 frequencies. Seven extracted prescriptions were explored according to the results of cluster analysis, which included 53 herbs with a frequency greater than 30. CONCLUSION: The formation of turbid toxin is mainly due to the mixture of dampness, stasis, stagnation, accumulation, heat-devil and carbuncles. The most precious experience when combating CAG should be the building of a comprehensive treatment network with the character of “six in one”: Resolving dampness, dissipating blood stasis, soothing stagnation, dissolving accumulation, reducing heat-devil, and removing carbuncles. © 2015 Baishideng Publishing Group Inc. To observe clinical efficacy of Huazhuo Jiedu Recipe (HJR) on chronic atrophic gastritic precancerosis (CAGP), and its effect on contents of lactic acid, total acid, free acid, and nitrite in the gastric juice, as well as tumor markers in gastric juice and blood. Two hundred and twenty-nine patients with CAGP were randomly assigned to two groups, the 119 patients in the treated group orally took HJR and the 110 patients in the control group orally took Weifuchun Tablet. The therapeutic course for all was three months, two courses in total. The therapeutic efficacy, changes of gastric acid contents before and after treatment were observed, and the tumor markers in the gastric juice and blood were detected using electrochemical luminescence immunoassay. The pathological effective rate was 83.2% (99/119) in the treated group and 60.9% (67/110) in the control group, showing significant difference between the two groups (P <0.05). The total acids and free acids in the gastric juice were significantly improved, contents of lactic acid and nitrite were significantly lowered in the two groups. Both contents of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen19-9 (CA19-9), carbohydrate antigen72-4 (CA72-4), and carbohydrate antigen125 (CA125) in the gastric juice and serum were significantly lowered after treatment in the treated group (P<0.05). Compared with the normal control group, the therapeutic effect was more obvious in the treated group (P<0.05). HJR could stimulate the gastric membranous secretion, enhance contents of total acids and free acids. It could prevent the further progress of CAGP by decreasing contents of lactic acid and nitrite in the gastric juice, and lowering contents of CEA, CA19-9, CA72-4, and CA125 in the gastric juice and serum.
