Effects, which are knowledge of scientific principles, can be used to transform inputs to outputs and achieve corresponding functions. To resolve a technical problem in innovative design, designers usually try to find the appropriate effects relevant to the required function. So it is very important to retrieve effect in terms of its function. This paper explores ontology-based functional semantic retrieval for effects knowledge base. To enhance the reasoning ability, the functional semantics of effects is represented as 〈input flow list, action verb, output flow list〉 in this paper. And functional ontology is used to expand the functional keywords in order to provide a variety of retrieval cues and trigger design inspiration. Using the functional semantic retrieval, designers obtain the lists of effects and/or chains of effects relevant to the required function, which greatly widen the solution space and increase opportunities for product innovation. © 2011 IEEE. In concept design, function of system is usually described with a verb and a noun. The verb describes the operation that the system applies on the object which is represented by the noun. The functional verbs are commonly expanded with its synonyms and antonyms, troponyms and hypernyms to use as design stimuli in engineering problems. To reuse previous design resolution, this paper presents a function based patent retrieval approach in which the initial keywords are represented as "verb + noun", and then the verbs and nouns are automatically expanded into verb set and noun set using Functional Basis and WordNet. The verb set is not only used as design stimuli, but also used as keywords for patent retrieval. The noun set is used to filter retrieval results. The experiment results indicate that the proposed approach can retrieve more functional relevant patents and facilitate cross-domain patent retrieval. ©2010 IEEE. Source

To determine the reasonable trimming component in the system functional model, a trimming priority identifying method was proposed based on the properties of components in the functional model. From the aspects of improving the level of ideal system and reducing the difficulty of searching solutions, influencing factors for identifying trimming priority were proposed. Based on the system functional model, the components' relevant attributes were extracted to compute evaluation value of the index. The weight coefficient of each index was determined with the method of maximum deviation and entropy to optimize the evaluation results. On this basis, the trimming process model was established to provide a feasible way to identify reasonable trimming component for trimming. The effectiveness of the method was revealed by improved design of water dispenser using the trimming process model. Source
