An environmental friendly corrosion inhibitor was prepared from polyaspartic acid, zinc sulphate, hexadecylldimethyl (2-sulphite) ethyl ammonium and hydroxyphosphonoacetic acid. The corrosion inhibition performance of the enviromentally friendly corrosion inhibitor on A3 carbon steel in seawater was studied by rotary hanging-piece corrosion tests and steady polarization. The corrosion testing pieces were characterized by scanning electron microscope. The result showed that the corrosion inhibition rate could reach 95 % when the concentration of the corrosion inhibitor was 100 mg L-1 at temperatures 40, 50 or 60 °C in seawater and the efficiency of biodegradability was 86.57 % in 28 days. © 2013 Asian Journal of Chemistry. Morphology and crystal phase of calcium carbonate, which formed with the presence of Mg 2+, were characterized by SEM and XRD. The effect of Mg 2++ on crystallization and crystal phase of calcium carbonate was studied. The results showed that the crystal phase of calcium carbonate were mainly calcite and aragonite and the content of aragonite was higher after adding Mg 2++ to the blank solution. With the increase of Mg 2++ concentration, the content of aragonite increased. The calcium carbonate crystals grain became more fine and the content of aragonite was higher by synergistic treatment between Mg 2++ and magnetic field. There was a strong inhibitory effect on calcite when the concentration of Mg 2++ was more than 0.50mmol.L -1. A polyaspartic acid derivative (PASP-SEA-ASP) was synthesized from polysuccinimide with 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid and aspartic acid. PASP-SEA-ASP achieved a better corrosion inhibition rate for A3 carbon steel in seawater compared with polyaspartic acid (49% cf. 45% at the dosage of 100. mg/L). The development of a composite inhibitor (a mixture of PASP-SEA-ASP, zinc sulfate, 2-hydroxyphosphonoacetic acid (HPAA) and hexadecylldimethyl (2-sulfite) ethyl ammonium on a mass ratio of 15:3:6:1, respectively) led to a significantly enhanced corrosion inhibition effect, achieving an inhibition rate of 97%. The mass ratio of the composite inhibitor could be adjusted to achieve the desired corrosion inhibition rate for seawater with varying characteristics. PASP-SEA-ASP also showed excellent scale inhibition properties for seawater, with a scale inhibition rate of 100% achieved with a dosage of 14. mg/L. This study demonstrated the potential of PASP-SEA-ASP to inhibit both corrosion and scale formation in domestic and industrial utilization of seawater such as cooling systems and thermal desalination processes. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Carbon aerogels were synthesized by a sol–gel process by polycondensation of phloroglucinol, resorcinol and formaldehyde, using sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide and sodium carbonate as the basic catalyst, respectively. The structure of carbon aerogels with different catalysts was characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The specific surface area, pore size distribution and pore volume were measured by surface area analyzer. The conductivity was measured by four-probe conductivity meter. The results show that the carbon aerogel in the presence of sodium carbonate has uniform network structure, specific surface area 623.34 m2 g−1, and the resistivity 0.173 Ω mm at pH 3.10. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York. The scale inhibition performances of both magnetic field and ESA/AMPS copolymer were investigated by using a static scale inhibition experiment, and the result showed that there was a synergistic scale inhibition effect between magnetic field and ESA/AMPS copolymer. The scale inhibition rate of both magnetic field and ESA/AMPS copolymer on CaCO3 increased by 12% as compared with that of ESA/AMPS copolymer alone under the conditions of water flow of 120 L/h, magnetic field intensity of 0.7 T, magnetic treatment time of 40 min and the ESA/AMPS copolymer dosage of 3 mg/L. And the synergistic scale inhibition rate of both magnetic field and ESA/AMPS copolymer on Ca3(PO4)2 increased by 42.4% as compared with that of ESA/AMPS copolymer alone under the same conditions except ESA/AMPS copolymer dosage of 14 mg/L. In addition, SEM and XRD characteristic results showed that ESA/AMPS copolymer could split and distort the crystal form of the resultant CaCO3 deposit samples while the synergism of both magnetic field and ESA/AMPS copolymer could not change the crystal form of the CaCO3 deposit samples further.
