Processes requiring a variable applied voltage often use power electronic devices. This causes reduced power factor and higher levels of current harmonic injection. Although power quality issues are typically rendered after the fact, by careful consideration during the design phase, equipment and/or processes can often be designed to achieve a better performance. This paper deals with methods for improving power factor and energy efficiency during the design phase for batch type industrial process heating applications with variable power requirements. © 2014 IEEE.

The past decade has seen significant changes in U.S. capital market activity during a time of accelerating commercialization of nanotechnology. The shifting capital market landscape has coincided with a host of new regulations that rivals what was witnessed during the 1930s. During this period we have seen a dramatic decline in the number of initial public offerings - particularly small-company IPOs - and a sharp decrease in the number of venture capital firms. We highlight important changes witnessed in U.S. capital market activity over the past decade and examine the changing dynamics of the U.S. venture capital business. We also assess the impact of shifts in U.S. capital markets and venture capital on innovation and nanotechnology. Despite headwinds that may persist in U.S. capital markets and the venture business, we see the potential for nanotechnology to become a key driver of innovation in the years ahead.

A comminuting machine includes a frame, a comminuting rotor coupled to the frame, and a rotary drive coupled to the rotor. The rotary drive including a controller, a multi-phase motor connected to the controller, a set of contactors disposed between the controller and the multi-phase motor for selectively providing driving motive force to the multi-phase motor, and at least one rheostat disposed between the controller and the multi-phase motor, in parallel with the first set of contactors, for selectively providing a stopping resistance to the multi-phase motor to effect frictionless braking of the comminuting rotor, wherein the controller is configured to operate the set of contactors and the at least one rheostat to single phase lines of the multi-phase motor for providing the stopping resistance.
