The invention relates to the scheduling of processes in a cluster of physical machines. In the invention, complex processes can be split into elementary processes. To run each elementary process, a Virtual Machine is created and allocated on each physical machine. The Virtual Machine is created in order to have a computing capacity at least equal to a computing load of the elementary process.

A video encoding system and method down-filters an incoming video signal to a subresolution before encoding by a standard block based encoding algorithm. The selection of the resolution to which the incoming signal is down filtered is determined on the basis of a prediction of the video quality that may be expected at the system output with regard to the complexity or entropy of the signal. The predicted output video quality may be estimated on the basis of the Quantization Parameter of an encoder receiving the input video signal, or a filtered video signal. The selection of a new down-filtered resolution may be carried out with regard to one or more thresholds.


The invention relates to the estimation of a computing capacity of a machine. The computing capacity is estimated by iteratively adding and removing calibrated computer processes on the machine, and performing a sum of computing loads of processes that execute on the machine. In order to characterize the ability of a machine to run in parallel a number of processes having a defined computing load, the processes are associated to a condition of success.

A rotation actuator (1) is equipped with a motor (2) and a reduction gear (3) disposed adjacent to each other. Both shaft end portions of a rotating shaft (5), which passes through the center of the motor (2) and reducer (3), are rotatably supported through first and second rolling bearings (14,15) by first and second fixed discs (11,12) that are mutually fastened and fixed. A rotation output plate (4) is supported through a third rolling bearing (18) in the outer peripheral surface of the second fixed disc (12). A sliding ring (19) is mounted between the rotation output plate (4) and the first fixed disc (11). The sliding ring (19) functions as a thrust bearing for the rotation output plate (4) and also functions as a sealing mechanism for preventing grease from flowing from the reducer gear (3) to the outside. A flat rotation actuator can be achieved.


In this wave generator (5) for a strain wave gearing (1), a plug (6) thereof is configured from a plurality of split plug segments (12-14) that are joined in the axial direction. Wave gearings (8-10) are installed to the split outer peripheral surfaces (12a-14a) of the split plug segments (12-14) by press fitting, and thereafter the split plug segments (12-14) can be joined in the axial direction. It is possible to easily produce the wave generator (5) in which a plurality of wave bearings (8-10) are press fitted, in parallel arrangement, on the non-circular outer peripheral surface (7).

The invention relates to a method and device for performing Just-In-Time Transcoding. The invention is applicable in the domain of video delivery, notably OTT video delivery, wherein users access video content in different representations. An encoding device according to the invention comprises modules for encoding video in a first representation, and generating symbols for retrieving decisions for transcoding video in a second representation. A transcoding device according to the invention is capable of decoding video compressed in a first representation, retrieve video coding decisions for a second representation according to video coding decisions of the first representation and symbols, and transcode on-the-fly video from the first to the second representation, upon the request of clients.


Approaches for encoding/transcoding of digital video based on subjective video quality preferences or display device characteristics or capabilities. A set of esthetic digital video preferences are received from a user via a user interface. The user may be associated with a supplier or provider of digital video or may be a viewer of the digital video. A video quality profile that describes the set of esthetic digital video preferences or the characteristics or capabilities of a display device is created and stored. Upon determining that a video quality profile is associated with a compressed digital video bit stream, a final rate of compression for the compressed digital video bit stream is determined using one or more video quality profiles. In this way, a users subjective video quality preferences or the characteristics or capabilities of a display device can be considered in encoding/transcoding digital video.

Approaches for transcoding on-the-fly (TOTF). A digital video is encoded to produce a set of encoding decisions. A video quality profile is created that describes the set of encoding decisions. Upon determining that the video quality profile is associated with a compressed digital video bit stream, a final rate of compression is determined, frame by frame, for the compressed digital video bit stream using the video quality profile. The final rate of compression may be determined either internal or external to an encoder/transcoder. The video quality profile may be created by reviewing a plurality of encoding decisions to determine which encoding decisions merit inclusion based on a variety of criteria.
