The article discusses the recycling of scrap tyres and shows possibilities how pyrol ysis can help to regain carbon black from end-of-life tyres for second use. Pyrolysis processes open the door for closing the circle from virgin carbon black over its usage in tyres to its reuse in the same article type. Source

A study was conducted to demonstrate replacement of phthalates by vegetable oil derived plasticizer in NBR compounds. The primary goal of adding plasticizers into polymers was to facilitate the processing and to improve the flexibility of the finished products. Plasticizers such as phthalate esters were employed successfully in the chemicals, plastics and construction industries, along with applications in packaging, adhesives, resins, and paper and printing. It was observed that four plasticizers were identified to conduct the investigations under the study. Four general purpose compound formulations were prepared for the investigations, such as o-ring compounds with a hardness of 75 durometer A, diesel fuel pump membrane compounds with a hardness of 73 durometer A, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) resistant hose compounds with a hardness of 80 durometer A, and gasket compounds with a hardness of 65 durometer A. An improved analytical method was used for the quantification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in carbon blacks, cured rubber compounds and tire treads. This method involves fluidized-bed extraction prior to clean up and analysis of PAH by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry applying the isotope dilution principle. It was demonstrated that the PAH profile in the extracts is strongly dependent on the type of carbon black, extender oil and resin as well as on the extraction solvent employed. In an additional migration study it was also shown that the chemical structure and the solubility of PAH in different simulants substantially influence the migration of PAH from rubber compounds. The present work describes the replacement of DBP by Pionier TP 130 C in the determination of the OAN used to characterise the structure or aggregate morphology of carbon blacks. The OAN investigation was done by varying the testing oil, equipment and type of carbon blacks while using the same methodology. It is demonstrated that Pionier TP 130 C can achieve OAN values comparable to that of DBP for soft and hard blacks, as well as for thermal blacks. Source

The present paper reports about the effect of the plasticizers on the performance of natural rubber (NR) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) used in tyre applications. The influence of the chemical structure of the oil (paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic) and oil loading on carbon black and silica filled compounds was studied considering the following aspects: i) the compatibility of plasticizers with polymers, ii) processability, iii) cure characteristics, iv) dynamic mechanical properties and v) physical properties before and after ageing. It was demonstrated that the choice of the right plasticizers is crucial for obtaining end products with desired properties. These products must meet not only the technical requirements but also the ecological demands. Source
