The Corrugated container industry asks papermakers to produce highly attractive linerboard with good multicolor printing properties to improve product appeal as much as possible at low cost to consumers. To meet this requirement, it is necessary to improve the visual appearance and printing properties of conventional linerboard which is made from recycled fibers for economic and environmental reasons. To meet this challenge, two new technologies, hot press drying and curtain coating, which make a strong combination as a method to produce high quality coated linerboard, were used. Hot press drying improved the smoothness of the linerboard and decreased the coating penetration, resulting in better surface smoothness after the coating process. The influence of the pigment composition on the brightness, gloss and smoothness of single or double coated linerboard was examined. Clay outperformed calcium carbonate by improving the brightness and gloss for coated linerboards, suggesting that the hiding power is more important than scattering characteristics when considering the pigment to be used in linerboard coating. The dynamic surface tension of the coating color decreased with the addition of a surfactant. It was shown that a surfactant that provides the curtain stability and less foaming should be used in the curtain coating. Mill experience from Dong-II Paper Mfg. Co. started the twolayer curtain coating operation at the end of 2008 was described.

This study examined the effects of acryl-grafted bentonite (AGB) in cationic poly(acrylamide) (CPAAm)/AGB nanocomposites on the flocculation and retention of micrometer-sized talc and ground calcium carbonate (GCC) suspensions used for papermaking. The AGB was synthesized by reacting Na +-bentonite with (3-acryloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane. The graft yield measured by thermogravimetric analysis was ca. 24%. Different concentrations (0, 1.0, 2.9, and 4.9 wt%, designated as CPAAm/AGB-0, -1, -3, and -5, respectively) of AGB were then added to the in situ inverse emulsion copolymerization of acrylamide and [2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride to produce the CPAAm/AGB nanocomposites. The nanocomposites improved the flocculation of the GCC suspension model significantly in an AGB concentration-dependent manner. Dynamic drainage analysis revealed a decrease in dewatering time and turbidity from 11.2 s (pure CPAAm) to 8.7 s and from 349 to 33 NTU, respectively, at the same concentration (0.3 wt%) of nanocomposite. The results of the fabrication of handsheets revealed significant improvement (up to 2-8%) in the total retention yield and ash retention yield with increasing AGB concentration at the same GCC content. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A series of cationic polyacrylamide/bentonite nanocomposites were prepared by inverse emulsion polymerization of acrylamide and [2-(acryloyloxy) ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (AOTAC) with grafted bentonite. Grafted bentonites were synthesized through a reaction of Na +-bentonite and coupling agents, such as (3-acryloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and (3-methacyloxypropyl) trimethoxy silane (MAPTMS) in toluene. It has been revealed by TGA analysis that the grafted yields of bentonite were 35.7 and 28.3%, respectively. Grafted bentonite with APTMS was used in inverse emulsion polymerization as a modifier in the amount of 1 ∼ 5wt%. The polymerization was carried out with W/O emulsion by using sorbitan monostearate as a surfactant and potassium persulfate as an initiator. The received materials were characterized by FTIR, capillary viscometry, and the anionic charge demand. The effects of cationic PAM/bentonite nanocomposites on aqueous model suspensions with GCC and talc were studied in both the absence and presence of pulp. It was found that the addition of grafted bentonite in the initial monomer could increase the intrinsic viscosities of nanocomposite solution and enhance the flocculation properties to aqueous suspension; however, their charge demands were reduced.


The present invention relates to a calcium carbonate having a surface charge, the preparing process thereof and filler for producing a paper using the same. The present invention provides the process of preparing a calcium carbonate having a surface charge, characterized in that it comprises the following steps of: preparing a solution mixture of one or more monomer selected from the group consisting of calcium hydroxide, acrylic acid, acrylamide, or [2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl]-trimethylammonium chloride; removing dissolved gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide in the said solution by injecting nitrogen (N_(2)) gas; adjusting pH of the said solution; and inducing a reaction by adding polymerization initiator of a high molecule while injecting carbon dioxide to the said mixture.
