Electrochemical impedance of 11 direct-to-metal (DTM) waterborne coatings was studied and impedance changes were used to find coatings that can provide the best protection in a highly corrosive environment. All 11 coatings were compared on a single Bode plot and the impedance at low frequency of 0.1 Hz was used as the key performance indicator for each coating. The results show that the best performing systems in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is also the best performing coatings in salt spray and Prohesion. The best overall coating performance is realized within the first 24-48 hours of EIS screening and the worst performing coating is also identified within the same timeframe.It is concluded that EIS not only acts as a detector of a coating's quality, but it can also be used as a predictor of the coating's long-term performance.
