Objective: It remains unclear whether Tai Chi is effective for preventing falls in older adults. We undertook this systematic review to evaluate the preventive effect of Tai Chi by updating the latest trial evidence. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched up to February 2016 to identify randomised trials evaluating Tai Chi for preventing falls in older adults. We evaluated the risk of bias of included trials using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool. Results were combined using random effects meta-analysis. Outcome measures: Number of fallers and rate of falls. Results: 18 trials with 3824 participants were included. The Tai Chi group was associated with significantly lower chance of falling at least once (risk ratio (RR) 0.80, 95% CI 0.72 to 0.88) and rate of falls (incidence rate ratio (IRR) 0.69, 95% CI 0.60 to 0.80) than the control group. Subgroup analyses suggested that the preventive effect was likely to increase with exercise frequency (number of fallers: p=0.001; rate of falls: p=0.007) and Yang style Tai Chi was likely to be more effective than Sun style Tai Chi (number of fallers: p=0.01; rate of falls: p=0.001). The results might be influenced by publication bias as the funnel plots showed asymmetry. Sensitivity analyses by sample size, risk of bias and comorbidity showed no major influence on the primary results. Conclusions: Tai Chi is effective for preventing falls in older adults. The preventive effect is likely to increase with exercise frequency and Yang style Tai Chi seems to be more effective than Sun style Tai Chi.

The sesamoid bones of feet are quite small but they play very important roles in regulating pressure. In this study, 9 male wrestlers from Guangdong Greco-Roman wrestling team served as the subjects. CT scanning image of feet and data have been used to reconstruct the three-dimensional structures of feet, based on which the investigation and measurements of the sesamoid bones and supernumerary bones have been completed. The result shows that every foot of the subjects has 2 or 3 sesamoid bones (only one case with 2 sesamoid bones and all the rest with 3 sesamoid bones). The occurrence rate of the first metatarsal sesamoids is 100% and that of the interphalangeal joint sesamoids is 94.4%, which is much higher than the results reported by previous studies. The occurrence rate of accessory navicular bone is 16.7% and that of the triquetral sesamoid bones is 22.2%. The occurrence rate of sesamoid bones and supernumerary bones in the second calcaneumi also are higher than the results in previous reports. It is concluded in our study that the occurrence rate of sesamoid bones and supernumerary bones and their morphological features are closely related to the acquired influence of exercise. © 2016 IEEE.

HONG KONG--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A study was conducted by Guangzhou Sport University on the patented technology Anti Gravity System™ (AGS) designed by AGS FX Creations. The AGS patented technology is similar to a suspension system integrated into a backpack. In response to the motions that are generated, this design is slightly springy, and it makes the backpack load feel a lot lighter. Based on the test conducted, the AGS technology results showed a slower rate of cervical back muscle fatigue, quicker muscle recovery, better stability and improved posture when compared to a traditional backpack without AGS technology. The test also concludes that under the appropriate walking pace, AGS technology can potentially reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries and muscle fatigue associated with carrying heavy backpack loads. The reason for this is because AGS backpack is able to compensate for the dynamic load. Biomechanical and physiological measurements were taken from 12 subjects (19 +/- 1.8 years old) who did no strenuous exercise two days prior to the test and are in healthy conditions (no acute or chronic illness). Two trials were conducted two days apart from each other. One was the control group where the participants wore a backpack with no AGS technology. The second group was the test group where the participants wore a backpack with AGS technology. For each trial, the participants carried the same amount of weight (8-10% of their body weight) and walked on a treadmill at 4.5km/h for 30 minutes. The Surface Electromyography measurement of the neck extensor, trapezius muscle, latissimus dorsi, and erector spinae muscle were taken along with gait and kinematics analysis. AGS FX Creations recognized the problem associated with heavy backpacks and hence has been working towards a solution since 2014. At first an AGS shoulder strap was invented. The shoulder strap is made from a highly elastic material so that when the user walks, a slight springy motion occurs. Based on user feedback, the shoulder strap made the carrying load feel lighter. To evaluate the effect of Tai Chi exercise on older people with nephritis, 124 older people with nephritis were asked to practice Tai Chi exercise for 40 min once every day. Results showed that Tai Chi quan exercise significantly decrease high-shear whole blood viscosity, low-shear whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), hematocrit (HCT), usea nitrogen, creatinine and creatinine scavenging rate during 12 months of practice. This indicates that Tai Chi exercise is beneficial to prevent and delay nephritis deterioration. © 2011 Academic Journals.

In structured P2P overlay networks, nodes and objects are assigned unique IDs in the same identifier space by using a consistent hashing function, and have been known to result in an imbalance factor of O(log n), where n is the number of nodes in the systems. Further imbalance may become severely due to the heterogeneity of objects loads and nodes capacities, and dynamic of objects and nodes in practical P2P network environment. Aiming at the issue of load distribution unbalancing in large scale DHT network, a binary-tree hierarchical load balance model is presented in this paper. Our proposed load balance model organizes the system into a hierarchy of balancing domain, therefore, load balancing decision are based solely on information pertaining to those nodes within each domain, and thus load balancing is performed independently. In addition, because our load balancing scheme is built on the proximity-aware hypercube overlay network, therefore, the loads on the heavily nodes can be transferred to lightly loaded nodes in a proximity-aware fashion. Consequently, it provides rapid convergence on load balance and reduces the load transfer cost. Simulations show that our proposed scheme can balance the load of the nodes in proportion to their capacity, and reduced the load transfer cost in the heterogeneous and dynamic network state.

BACKGROUND: Animal exhaustion models are used mostly in exercise-induced fatigue research, in which complete exhaustion is confused with sports fatigue. OBJECTIVE: By understanding of exercise-induced fatigue, understanding the mechanism of its occurrence, to grasp the reasonable and effective control measures, which to eliminate fatigue is very important for improving public health, improving sports performance and preventing sports injuries. METHODS: A computer-based search of Medline, Embase, CBMdisc and CNKI was used for articles related to exercise-induced fatigue published from 1966 to 2014. The keywords were "exercise-induced fatigue, peripheral fatigue; central fatigue, exercise-induced fatigue" in English and Chinese, respectively. Finally, 49 articles were included in result analysis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The criteria and condition control of exercise-induced fatigue should be recognized. The mechanisms of peripheral fatigue and central fatigue are still unclear. The peripheral fatigue may locate in the neuromuscular junction, T system, sarcoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and myocardial cell membrane with the corresponding material changes. During the exercise-induced central fatigue, there are corresponding changes in the neurotransmitters produced by the central nervous system, transfers quality and neural hormone. © 2015, Journal of Clinical Rehabilitative Tissue Engineering Research. The IEEE 802.16 standard provides a scheme for creating multi-hop relay networks, which can be deployed as a high speed wide area wireless network at low cost. Although the standard defines signaling mechanisms in mesh mode, however, it doesn't specify wireless resource management in the protocol. In this paper, we address the problem of resource allocation with the goal of providing fairness access to wireless channel for all the nodes as well as high network throughput in IEEE 802.16 mesh networks. We first define node's unsatisfactory index and throughput function. Then, a multi-objective programming formulation is proposed for optimizing network performance. Accordingly, a dynamic programming based resource allocation and scheduling algorithm is presented to provide an optimal resource allocation to achieve fairness among different nodes as well as high network throughput in IEEE 802.16 mesh networks. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm significantly provides both fairness of channel access and optimal network throughput. © 2010 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

We demonstrate that Photonic Crystal (PhC) based Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) can be used to realize optical biosensor by using the Fano resonance of the MZIs. Small analyte presented in the MZIs would, however, excite higher-Q Fano resonance of the system than the big one. The scattering object in the arm would create a resonant path (discrete state) for the MZIs, which interacts with the input broadband continuum spectrum and thus results in the Fano resonance of the system. We can therefore detect the location, size and refractive index of biological analyte (down to approximately 100 nm in size) in the MZIs via the output transmission spectrum. An analytical model, which outlines the sensing mechanism, is presented together with the finite difference time domain computer simulations. Both of them validate the proposed sensing capacity. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Purpose: This study aims at evaluating the diagnostic value of steps/min in differentiating exercise intensity through Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve so as to determine the best cutoff point of steps/min for Light Physical Activity (LPA), Moderate Physical Activity (MPA) and vigorous physical activity (VPA) for Chinese children. Method: With the synchronous monitor of the portable gas metabolic analyzer (Cosmed K4b2) and three-axis accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X), 60 subjects of 11-14 years old middle school students (being evenly composed of males and females) would be tested with resting and 3~8km/h walking/running exercises. The experimental data were used to draw a ROC curve. Result: The result showed that there was no gender difference (P > 0.05) between males and females on steps/min and exercise intensity when they conducted the same activity; the corresponding AUC of 3METs and 6METs was 0.906(P < 0.05) and 0.895(P < 0.05) respectively, which manifested that steps/min had great value to diagnose the exercise intensity. The best critical point of steps/min for 3METs and 6METs determined by the maximum Youden value was 121 steps/min and144 steps/min respectively with high sensitivity (0.744~0.944) and low 1-specificity (0.035~0.160). Steps/min was effective to differentiate the best critical point of exercise intensity, and the consistency examination result was also good. Conclusion: It can be concluded from this study that steps/min is effective to diagnose the exercise intensity and the best critical value of steps/min for the adolescents to do MPA is 121 steps/min to 144 steps/min and ≥ 144 steps/min for VPA. © Trade Science Inc.

Due to resource constraint and topology dynamism of wireless networks, P2P systems designed for wired networks may not be applicable to wireless networks. Based on semi-direct product of two groups in the algebra group theory, a new structured P2P system, which was the cayley graph with constant degrees, was presented. By using the Cayley-4DHT, different nodes were partitioned into corresponding groups based on nodes' identifiers, thus, neighbor nodes in the overlay networks were also neighbors in physical networks. Furthermore, by using cross-layer technology of wireless networks in the routing algorithm, the broadcast character of wireless networks was utilized for searching resources in P2P systems. Theory analysis and simulation results showed that the proposed Cayley-4DHT can achieve optimal performance of searching resources in wireless mesh networks.
