Aiming at the significant difference in expectation of the pulp properties estimated by manual experience based on the ratio of waster papers used, in this paper, utilizing the field data from paper mill, two modeling methods, back propagation (BP) neural networks and support vector machine (SVM), were individually applied to the prediction of pulp brightness based on the ratio of waste papers used. The prediction models were developed using all the data set and the average data set respectively. The results showed that, in terms of the prediction accuracy, prediction stability and training time, the prediction model of pulp brightness by SVM method using the average data set not only had good prediction precision (2.42%) and fairly prediction stability (0.58%), but also the fast training process (0.2 s), which could meet the requirements of the paper mill. © 2015, China National Pulp and Paper Research Institute (CNPPRI). Rebuilding with economic suitable advanced new technology is one of the important ways for industrial up-grading, energy-saving and emission-reducing of the industry. Compared with building a new production line, the solution selection, the matching of the new and old systems, the project results and economic investment of the rebuilding are important in order to realize the advantage of the rebuilding. By analyzing the product quality and energy consumption problems in Paper Machine No.8 of Guangzhou Paper Co., Ltd, several alternative technical integration solutions were suggested after investigation. By comparing the advanced level of the technology, the matching of new and old systems and economic efficiency of different rebuilding solutions, a solution with less investment and short rebuilding time, rebuilding the key parts of the paper machine with high-tech was adopted, and good results were achieved. In order to study the influences of air temperature and weather on total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD )of the papermaking wastewater, the variations of TCOD value of papermaking wastewater in different seasons and weather conditions were compared, and the relationship between air temperature and temperature of SBR influent was also investigated. The results indicated that air temperature and the temperature of SBR influent had correlation; TCOD value increased with the increase of SBR influent temperature; when air temperature fluctuated faintly, the TCOD value of SBR influent in cloudy days was higher than that in sunny days. The study results revealed that in addition to control aeration flow rate in the SBR process, the temperature of SBR influent could also be another adjusting variable in papermaking wastewater treatment process.
