A new decentralized control method, named Regular Tetrahedron Formation (RTF) strategy, is presented for a swarm of simple robots operating in three dimensional space. This strategy is based on virtual spring mechanism and basically, allows four neighboring robots to autonomously form a Regular Tetrahedron (RT) regardless of their initial positions. RTF strategy is made scalable and applied for various sizes of swarms through a dynamic neighbor selection procedure. Thus, each robot's behavior in each time step is only dependent on the local position information of three dynamically selected neighbors. In addition, an obstacle avoidance model suitable for swarm maneuvering is also introduced. Algorithm is studied with computational experiments which demonstrated that it is effective and practical. © 2011 IEEE.

A hybrid adaptive genetic algorithm is proposed for solving constrained optimization problems. The algorithm combines adaptive penalty method and smoothing technique in order to get no parameter tuning and easily escaping from the local optimal solutions. Meanwhile, local line search technique is introduced and a new crossover operator is designed for getting much faster convergence. The performance of the algorithm is tested on thirteen benchmark functions and the results indicate that the proposed algorithm is robust and effective. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

A new control method based on least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) and model predictive control (MPC) is proposed for the control of fermenter temperature. Existing PID control doesn't consider the model of controlled object, so it tends to bring steady-state error. The proposed method utilizes LSSVM to obtain fermenter temperature's model and then uses it to implement MPC. The simulation results show that our method has better control performance than traditional PID control. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The rule set which is acquired based on rough set theory can be classified into two categories: deterministic rules and probabilistic rules. Traditional attribute reduction definitions in variable precision rough set model cannot guarantee the rule properties, namely deterministic or probabilistic. In this paper, a new criterion for attribute reduction is put forward based on variable precision rough set model. The rule properties can be preserved during the process of attribute reduction. The relationships between the new reduct definition and available definitions, including Ziarko's reduct definition and β lower distribution reduct definition are also discussed.

Variable precision rough set model, as an important probabilistic approach to rough set theory, can deal with many practical problems which involve noise data and cannot be effectively handled by Pawlak's rough set model. Generally, rough set theory based knowledge reduction includes attribute reduction and attribute value reduction. Attribute reduction in variable precision rough set model has been attracted many researchers' attentions. However, attribute value reduction in variable precision rough set model was rarely discussed. In this paper, an approach to attribute value reduction in variable precision rough set model is presented, with which the redundant information in the given decision table can be effectively removed and the properties of the acquired rules, namely deterministic or probabilistic, can be preserved well. © 2011 IEEE.
