A two-dimensional equation of total phosphorus transport with inner pollution sources on horizontal plane was derived to simulate and analyze the treatment effects of different combinations of pollutant restoration units. Serious phytoplankton blooms occurred repeatedly every spring in many bays of the Three-Gorges Reservoir. However, little was known about the impact of phytoplanktivorous fish on spring phytoplankton community structure in the Three-Gorges Reservoir. In this study, an enclosure experiment was conducted to assess the impact of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) on the plankton community structure and water quality of the Three-Gorges Reservoir during 2 April to 2 May 2008. The field experiment was performed in six enclosures. Stocking silver carp into enclosures caused a dramatic change in the aquatic ecosystem. For example, pH, transparency, DO and phosphate were reduced, while chlorophyll-a concentration and turbidity increased dramatically. Furthermore, during the enclosure experiment, some zooplankton such as rotifer and copepoda were significantly reduced, and some phytoplankton and protozoa were significantly increased by silver carp. The predation by silver carp might have increased phytoplankton biomass through reducing the densities of some zooplankton which directly fed on phytoplankton. It was concluded that silver carp was not suitable for clearing spring phytoplankton (<20 μm) blooms in the Three-Gorges Reservoir at the present time. Source

A finite-volume model of 2-D shallow water equations is used to simulate and analyze the tidal bore in Qiantang River and different affecting factors are examined. The simulation shows that under a steady wind speed of 10 m/s the surge takes W-shape if driven by east, northeast or southeast wind, while M-shape if driven by west, northwest or southwest wind, and that in these two cases the maximum surges at Qibao station are 2.2 m and -2.1 m, respectively. Under the small river volume of a dry year, the low water level at Qibao raises by 1.22 m and the tide range is reduced by 1.28 m. Under the river runoff of 2000 m/s the high and low tide levels at Qibao raise by 0.45 m and 0.89 m, respectively, and the tide range is reduced by 0.44 m. © Copyright. Source

Following the completion of the Three-Gorges Dam, there was a strong spring phytoplankton bloom in Xiangxi Bay of Three-Gorges Reservoir. However, our knowledge of relationship between spring phytoplankton bloom and environmental factors was still limited. In this study, phytoplankton species composition, biomass, chlorophyll a concentration and environmental factors at two sampling sites in Xiangxi Bay were investigated during 25 March to 18 May 2007. The Xiangxi Bay was eutrophic with the lowest values of total nitrogen and total phosphorus being 0.80 and 0.07 mg/L, respectively. A total of 66 algal taxa belonging to seven phyla and 45 genera were identified. Peridiniopsis niei Liu was the most abundant species which preferred standing water. Canonical correspondence analysis and correlation analysis revealed that nitrate was significantly associated with phytoplankton growth. The phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentration was correlated significantly negatively with nitrate concentration, and nitrate concentration was very low during bloom periods. Heavy rainfall was the main reason of phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentration and biomass decreasing and blooms disappearing. In addition, heavy rainfall also brought more nitrate into the Bay which provided sufficient nitrogen source for blooms occurring again. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V. Source

A five-year field trial was conducted at the surrounding area of Dabao Mountain Mine to explore the feasibility and availability of using kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus), a fiber crop with strong heavy metals tolerance and potential economic value, to reclaim the multi-metal contaminated acidic farmland soil. Different amendments were applied prior to the kenaf planting to evaluate their effects on the soil properties and kenaf growth. After the amendments application, the kenaf could grow well on the heavy metals contaminated soil with the Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, and As concentrations being 1600, 440, 640, 7.6, and 850 mg · kg-1, respectively. Among the amendments, dolomite and fly ash had better effects than limestone and organic fertilizer. With the application of dolomite and fly ash, the aboveground dry mass production of kenaf reached 14-15 t · hm-2, which was similar to that on normal soils, and the heavy metal concentrations in the bast fiber and stem of kenaf decreased significantly, as compared with the control. The mass of the bast fiber accounted for 32%-38% of the shoot production, and the extractable heavy metal concentrations in the bast fiber could meet the standard of 'technical specifications of ecological textiles'in China, suggesting that the bast fiber had potential economic value. It was suggested that planting kenaf combining with dolomite/fly ash application could be an effective measure to reclaim the multi-metal contaminated acidic farmland soil. Source
