Cytosolic pH changes in single thymocytes in the early stages of apoptosis were examined with spectral-crosstalk-improved three-channel real-time fluorescence imaging. Spectral crosstalk was greatly reduced by this improved image processing method. Compared with normal thymocytes, the improved image processing method showed that the cytosolic pH value of thymocytes undergoing apoptosis was lower. A slight diversity in the intracellular pH values of samples subjected to different drug treatments was also observed. This new image processing method is beneficial to the application of the three-channel real-time fluorescence imaging to biological processes. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

STUDY DESIGN.: Retrospective matched-cohort analysis. OBJECTIVE.: To evaluate the change in radiographical parameters in patients undergoing interbody fusion and posterior instrumentation compared with posterior spine fusion (PSF) alone for degenerative scoliosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA.: Little is known about the effect of lateral interbody fusion (LIF) on sagittal plane correction in the setting of degenerative scoliosis. We performed a retrospective study to investigate these changes compared with PSF. METHODS.: Between 1997 and 2011, 33 patients had LIF at 181 levels between T8 and L5 vertebrae for the treatment of degenerative scoliosis (mean; 5 ± 2 levels). Of those, 23 patients had additional anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) at 37 levels between L4 and S1 vertebrae (mean; 1.6 ± 0.5 levels). A 1:1 matched control of patients who underwent PSF was performed. Patients were matched by age, sex, and diagnosis. Clinical and radiographical data were collected and compared between the matched cohorts. RESULTS.: Lumbar lordosis (LL) was significantly restored in the LIF ± ALIF compared with PSF cohort (44 ± 14 vs. 36 ± 15 , P = 0.02). The segmental LL over the 102 LIF levels significantly improved from 12 ± 10 to 21 ± 13 postoperatively (P < 0.0001). However, the change over the 37 ALIF levels was not significant (from 30 ± 15 to 29 ± 9 , P = 0.8). Sagittal plane alignment was improved in the LIF ± ALIF compared with PSF cohort and trended toward but did not reach significance (3.8 ± 3.2 cm vs. 6.2 ± 5.7 cm, P = 0.09). Sacral slope was significantly higher in the LIF ± ALIF compared with PSF cohort (33 ± 11 vs. 28 ± 10 , P = 0.03). Pelvic tilt was lower in the LIF ± ALIF compared with PSF cohort and trended toward but did not reach significance (22 ± 10 vs. 26 ± 10 , P = 0.08). CONCLUSION.: LL and sacral slope had mildly but statistically improved in the interbody fusion cohort compared with PSF cohort. Sagittal alignment and pelvic tilt trended toward but did not reach statistical significance. 14147 Background: In China, gastric cancer has been treated by Chinese medicinal herbs to prevent relapse and metastasis for decades. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness and the mechanism of artistical composition of Chinese medicinal herbs (YWKL) in preventing gastric cancer metastasis.The herbs, after decoction, were administered by feeding 615 mice, which is a proventriculus cancer (FC) transplanted model, the rate of its lung metastasis rate is 70-80%. The inhibitory effect of artistical composition of Chinese medicinal herbs on FC spontaneous lung metastasis was evaluated by histological classification method. Apoptosis were determined through TUNEL technique. The expression of apoptosis relative gene was determined by immunohistochemical methods.It has been found that YWKL can significantly decrease the tumorous node numbers in the lung, while increase the apoptosis cell index (AI) of tumor cell metastasizing to lung. We found the expression of Fas,Bax were much higher than that of control group, FasL and Bcl2 were no significantly different between the two groups.The oral application of the herbs after decoction was demonstrated to prevent gastric cancer metastasis mice model. The mechanism of YWKL-induced apoptosis in FC cancer cell might through regulating the expression of Fas and Bax genes. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

To report the therapeutic effectiveness and feasibility of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment in patients with urinary retention which is caused by cauda equina injury and refractory to conventional conservative treatments.From 9 August 2007 to 10 May 2010 prospective evaluation was carried out in 15 patients with neurogenic urinary retention secondary to cauda equina injury who underwent EA treatment at bilateral points BL32, BL33 and BL35. All patients received five sessions of EA treatment each week for the first 4 weeks, three sessions a week for the following 2 weeks, and then were followed up for 6 months. Voiding abilities, postvoiding residual urine volume (RUV) and maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) were documented as outcome measures.After 6 weeks EA treatment, 10/15 enrolled patients regained their self-voiding ability, and the mean postvoiding RUV for all patients decreased by 303.6148.8 ml. In nine patients with documented data, Qmax increased by 11.06.3 ml/s. In nine patients, voiding difficulties changed from severe to mild. At the end of 6 months follow-up, 8/10 patients retained their regained self-voiding ability, whereas two patients had lost their voiding ability again.The results indicate that the EA treatment may have longlasting therapeutic effectiveness in the management of neurogenic urinary retention secondary to cauda equina injury.
