The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of the addition of obstacles during a six minute walk test (6MWT) on functional parameters and on cardiorespiratory response in stroke patients. Seventeen post stroke patients (52.6 ± 9.4 years; 170.9 ± 6.6 cm; 70.4 ± 10.7 kg) were included in this study. They realized a 6MWT without obstacle (6MWT-SO) and another one with obstacles (6MWT-AO). During this two functional tests, oxygen uptake (V̇ O2, heart rate and gait velocity were recorded. Results showed that obstacles did not increase oxygen uptake of stroke patients. Only the energetic cost was increased. This increase could be explained by the reduction of the gait velocity. © 2013 ACAPS, EDP Sciences. Source
