The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of surface finishing and polishing on corrosion behaviour of some commercial dental amalgams. Two commercial dental amalgam: "PD" Silver Alloy (Switzerland) and Megalloy EZ (Germany), were selected for this study. The commercial amalgam alloys were triturated according to the manufacturer's instructions in a mechanical trituratorfor 10 sat 4000 rpm. 20 samples from each material were obtained. The samples were randomly split in 4 groups. 5 samples were maintained as control, 5 samples were immersed in Fusayama-Mayer artificial saliva for 7 days, 5 samples were submitted to finishing and polishing procedures after 48 h from the setting time using abrasive discs and after that immersed in artificial saliva for 7 days, 5 samples were submitted to finishing and polishing procedures after 48 h from the setting time using abrasive silicone polisher and after that immersed in artificial saliva for 7 days. The samples were analyzed using a scanning electronic microscope and an X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer detector to evaluate the morphological aspects and the chemical composition of the samples surfaces. SEM micrographs showed the complex structure of both commercial products, with different amalgam phases observed especially on polished and finished samples. The corrosion on finished and polished samples was significantly lower when compared with unfinished samples. For both analysed products there was a decrease of mercury ion mean values in corroded groups when compared to control group. Silicone abrasive polishers seem to lead to a less protective effect against corrosion when compared to abrasive disks. Finishing and polishing procedure increased the amalgam resistance to corrosion.
