Van der Waals (VdW) interactions constitute a rather small component in the cohesive energy of ionic crystals. The contributions of the VdW and the short range repulsion becomes more and more predominant at successive differentiations of the lattice energy as compared to the coulomb contributions because of their particular nature of dependence on the lattice parameter. The complete Van der Waals (VdW) contributions to the equilibrium condition and the second order elastic constant for NaCl and CsCl structure alkali halides have been derived in this paper.

Background: The present sero-genetic study is the first of its kind to present the baseline data of Bharia tribe of Madhya Pradesh. The main aim of this study is to provide phenotype and allele-frequency data to characterize the population genetically and to fill the void on the genetic map of Madhya Pradesh. Materials and Methods: For this, blood samples from 92 unrelated healthy individuals of Bharia tribe from Chhindwara district (Tamia block) were collected. Hemolysates prepared were analyzed for two serological (A1A2BO and Rh) and six biochemical (adenosine deaminase, adenylate kinase locus 1, acid phosphatase locus 1, phosphoglucomutase locus 1, esterase D and glucosephosphate isomerase) parameters, following the standard electrophoretic techniques. Results: The Chi-square test for goodness of fit revealed no significant deviation between the observed and expected numbers in any of the seven genetic markers, suggesting that the tribe is in genetic equilibrium. A high incidence of B allele in A1A2BO blood group and low incidence of the A1 allele, with presence of A2 in only one individual, and a low frequency of Rh(D) (Rh negative allele) was observed in serological markers. Also, no rare variant was observed for biochemical markers. Conclusion: Principal Component Analysis done in order to detect the genetic affinity of Bharia tribe with other populations from the adjoining states of Madhya Pradesh based on the allele frequencies, showed a close association of Bharia with Gujarat and Rajasthan. Hence, this study has been helpful in revealing the genetic structure and affinity of Bharia tribe.

The solutions of electromagnetic field equations for non-radiative coupled dielectric guides are derived using mode matching technique. Dispersion characteristics and wave impedance for the even and odd mode of non-radiative coupled dielectric guides are computed. Dispersion curves are plotted for various dielectric materials and dimensional parameters as a function of frequency. Normalized electric field for dominant electric component E y 11 of TM even and odd modes for various half spacing between two dielectric slabs of non-radiative coupled dielectric guide have been plotted. The non-radiative phenomenon in the coupled dielectric guide has been discussed in detail. The hybrid directional couplers in the above configuration have been designed by computing the normalized propagation constants. The superiority of such directional couplers is discussed. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In the present paper, we have investigated the phase transition and elastic properties of BeO at high pressure using three-body potential model (TBPM). The present interaction potential consists of longrange coulomb and three-body interactions and short-range overlap repulsion effective up to second neighbour ions. We have studied the phase transition from wurtzite (B4) to rock salt (B1) for BeO. The phase transition pressure (Pt) obtained from this approach shows a respectably good agreement with experimental and other theoretical data. We have also computed the collapse of relative volume changes (ΔV(Pt)/V(0)). Three-body potential model has also been used to derive the correct expressions for third-order elastic constants and pressure derivatives of second-order elastic constants for BeO. © Indian Academy of Sciences.
