Indirect plate enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was standardized and evaluated for its effectiveness in immunodiagnosis of haemonchosis in experimental and clinical cases in sheep by using somatic whole adult antigen of H. contortus. Plate ELISA was standardized using 5 μg/well antigen concentration with 1:100 and 1:1000 of sera and conjugate dilution. Indirect plate ELISA was able to demonstrate the antibody titre at different weeks post infection in experimental sheep. A comparison of plate ELISA on suspected field sera and faecal sample examination by floatation method revealed that 74 samples were found to be positive by ELISA but only ten by faecal examination. Sensitivity of plate ELISA was found to be 80.0%, whereas specificity was 21.42% indicating that this test is quite sensitive for clinical cases; an early diagnosis, however, lacks specificity.

The benefit of indigenous knowledge can be harnessed and improved upon by its appropriate use, establishing validity of such knowledge and integrating it with development programme. The marine fisheries scenario of Gujarat coast has considerably changed in the past four decades. The fishing operation has been extended beyond 90m depth contour and the number of days per fishing trip has increased. Operational cost, wages and the cost of other inputs have increased. On the other hand, quality and quantity of the output have declined. Unlike the modern techniques, the Indigenous technical knowledge (ITK) had a significant level of adoption either knowingly or unknowingly, among the fishers because these ITKs have been generously passed on to newer generations by older ones. Numbers of research workers have reported some ITKs on fisheries with reference to marine fisheries resource, conservation and management. The study documented rich, varied and potential indigenous technical knowledge of Gujarat coast. Copyright © EM International.

We study the phase transitions occurring in the gravitational clustering of galaxies on the basis of specific heat analysis and Yang-Lee theory. We find that a first-order phase transition occurs when galaxies cluster gravitationally from an initial homogeneous phase, unlike in material sciences. At a critical temperature T c, the system breaks the symmetry from homogeneity and there is growth of correlation functions from a linear to a non-linear regime. These results are extended to multicomponent systems and extended mass galaxies. It is found that there is little effect of extended mass but appreciable effect of the different mass profiles of galaxies in a multicomponent system. The phase transition for a multicomponent system, dominated by more massive galaxies, occurs at an earlier stage of clustering as compared to a single-component system. The results of Yang-Lee theory of phase transitions applied to the gravitational clustering of galaxies closely match with those from specific heat analysis. © 2012 The Authors Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society © 2012 RAS.
