The reliability of a steel-melting object operation depends to a considerable extent on the state of the furnace hearth refractory lining. Prolonged and partial furnace stoppages lead to loss of integrity of the sintered layer whose restoration requires performance of several necessary operations. Timely repair of the sintered layer reduces hot lost time and periclase material consumption. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

The basic technological parameters of the process of molding by means of extrusion of diatomic articles at OOO Diatomitovye Kombinat are determined, in particular, the composition of the charge, methods of preparation of the charge, and the molding and heat processing regimes. It is shown that addition of chalk to the charge increases the working temperature to 1200°C and improves the physico-chemical indicators of the properties of the resulting articles. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

An experimental estimate is provided of the possibility of improving the strength properties of materials prepared from Al 2O 3 traditional for ceramic technology by introducing into them additions of nanosize particles of the same composition. Construction of a cooled container is presented with a detachable loading vessel and a sealed heat exchange cavity. With the aim of increasing the endurance of the end sealing under high temperature conditions and reducing air flow through the container the end seal it is made in the form of a circular collector with a steam generator with circular orifice, that is directed at an angle to the wall of the pipeline and in a direction opposite to container movement. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

Results are provided for a study of the operating conditions of the refractory lining of steel-pouring ladles of OAO Nizhnetagil Metallurgical Combine, that are subject to the corrosive physicochemical action of slag and metal during steel smelting from vanadium-containing raw material. The feasibility of applying specially designed refractory articles is demonstrated. Through the use of such articles it is shown that it is possible to reduce the thermal stresses that are experienced in the use of lining, markedly reduce separation of refractory products, and reduce heat losses through the brickwork by virtue of the presence of a heat-insulating layer in a given article consisting of refractory material and artificial pores as well as gaps for placement of additional heat insulation. These types of refractory products may be compacted and either roasted or unroasted and may also be manufactured according to the technology used in the fabrication of concrete. A press mold has been produced and put into production at the refractory plant of OAO NTMK for the purpose of fabricating specialized articles. The articles have successfully undergone tests, introduced into the crown of open-hearth furnaces, and are used for lining of rotary furnaces. The life of the linings was increased 1.3-1.4-fold. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
