The results of monitoring radon emanations in the territory of Gorno-Altaisk due to seismic activity and their influence on human health are considered. It is shown that the level of activity of subsoil radon in the vicinity of the fault zone in the territory of Gorno-Altaisk exceeds such a level recorded in Moscow by 3–4 times. There is ambiguity in the behavior of radon as a precursor of a seismic event. Some radon anomalies are synchronous with moments of earthquakes and others correspond to quiet periods. The radon activity is more closely associated with the earthquakes localized in the aftershock zone of the Chuya earthquake. This is assumed to be caused by the network of fluid-conducting channels within the active fault between this region and the observation station. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

In 2006 preliminary plans were made public showing that Gazprom intended to construct a pipeline through the Altai republic (Russia, south-west Siberia). Unfortunately, there was almost no attention to integrating the conservation of cultural heritage (both archaeological and landscape) into the planning of the pipeline, though the Altai is well-known for its rich cultural heritage. Hitherto, no assessment has been made of the potential impact of the project, nor did Gazprom release detailed information about the exact course of the route. The present article aims to illustrate the potential impact of the pipeline based on a detailed study of a small segment of the route, using remote sensing images and data gathered during fieldwork. This assessment underlines the need for a well-thought-out strategy, which is required if sustainable integration of heritage conservation into the construction plan is to be realized. If such a balance is not found, thousands of archaeological monuments could disappear, which would result in a huge cultural and scientific loss. As a possible solution, an integrative strategy founded on a desk-based study of remote sensing images and a well-directed field survey is suggested. © International Mountain Society.

We consider the dynamics of some meteorological parameters in Gorny Altai from 2000 to 2011. We analyzed the variations in the meteorological parameters related to the strong Chuya earthquake (September 27, 2003). A number of anomalies were revealed in the time series. Before this strong earthquake, the winter temperatures at the nearest meteorological station to the earthquake source increased by 8–10°C (by 2009 they returned to the mean values), while the air humidity in winter decreased. In the winter of 2002, we observed a long negative anomaly in the time series of the atmospheric pressure. At the same time, the decrease in the released seismic energy was replaced by the tendency to its increase. Using wavelet analysis we revealed the synchronism in the dynamics of the atmospheric parameters, variations in the solar and geomagnetic activities, and geodynamic processes. We also discuss the relationship of the atmospheric and geodynamic processes and the comfort conditions of the population in the climate analyzed here. © 2014, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The article describes the geo-ecological principles and their relationship with the sustainable development of natural resources. The authors propose conceptual illustration of sustainable recreational use of natural resources of cross-border areas of Altai and analyze the main diversification paths of the tourism product of the region. Cross-border cooperation between the countries of the region and the organization of a single eco-economic and recreational space is of special importance as it is the basis of sustainable mutually beneficial economic development. The authors carried out the systematization of the concepts of sustainable recreational use of natural resources and grounded its geo-ecological principles as exemplified by crossborder areas of Altai. © 2010 – 2017.

This article presents an analysis of the influence of the geological factors on the health of the population of the Altai Republic. A study of the geological and geophysical structure of the territory in question has revealed that, for some years before the earthquake, the health of the population was affected by a diverse set of geological characteristics and geophysical fields including mineral deposits, active faults, anomalies in geophysical fields, certain features of atmospheric gas and aerosol characteristics, and geochemical anomalies. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
