The verification of buckling resistance according to the effectivep width method given in EC3 part 1-5 (section 4) is marked by a time consuming and complex calculation process. Moreover, for fatigue affected structures, such as bridges, the applicability is restricted. Within this paper, a simplified procedure is introduced which extends the linear approach of reduced stresses (EC3-1-5, section 10) by introducing an effective thickness. Thus, the plastic resistance of the resulting cross section can be exploited similar to the first approach, but at lower computational time. © 2014 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. In the past two years several railroad bridges were established as Network arch bridges by DB AG. The construction method is characterized for the bridge construction particularly by an effective, an economical and aesthetically a carrying construction. Considering complex carrying behavior and more difficult geometry high demands on basic design, detailed design and construction works are to be made. The experiences when planning and building of the network arch bridges in the railway bridge construction are specified in the following article and described on the basis of examples. © Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. Durch die Einführung einer "wirksamen Blechdicke" werden die beiden im Eurocode 3-1-5 enthaltenen Verfahren zum Nachweis der Beulsicherheit ineinander überführt. Das Ergebnis ist ein zweistufiges Verfahren, das die Einfachheit der Methode der reduzierten Spannungen und die Wirtschaftlichkeit der Methode der wirksamen Breiten in sich vereint. Dieses bereits in der Zeitschrift Stahlbau [4] vorgestellte vereinfachte Verfahren wird hier anhand eines Praxisbeispiels ausführlich erläutert und diskutiert. By introducing an effective plate-thickness both approaches of the Eurocode 3-1-5 to calculate the buckling resistance are merged together. The outcome is a two-step method, which combines the ease of use of the reduced stress method and the high cross-section resistances of the effecticvep width method. The Rendsburg High Bridge - a railway viaduct across the Kiel Canal - is a more than 100 year old technical monument. Nethertheless it is used under full traffic load - as a bottleneck for the traffic to Scandinavia. The bridge, a riveted steel construction, is currently extensively refitted. The maintenance procedures comprise a strengthening for today's railway traffic loads beside the renewal of the corrosion protection and the repair of defects.
