Oligonucleotides, in which one of the two nonbridging oxygen atoms of internucleotidic phosphates is replaced by a different type of atom or a substituent, are useful as therapeutic agents and probes to elucidate mechanisms of enzymatic reactions. The internucleotidic phosphorus atoms of these oligonucleotides are chiral, and the properties of these oligonucleotides are affected by the absolute configuration of the chiral phosphorus atoms. In order to address the issue of chirality, various methods have been developed to synthesize these P-chiral oligonucleotide analogs in a stereocontrolled manner. The invention of imidacloprid, the most important neonicotinoid insecticide, was initiated by replacement of the framework of nithiazine with an imidazolidine ring. Through the finding of 1-(6-chloro-3-pyridylmethyl)-2- nitromethyleneimidazolidine, imidacloprid was invented. At the same time cyanoiminothiazolidinyl neonicotinoid thiacloprid was discovered. These products possess pronounced systemic properties and improved photostability in addition to supreme insecticidal ability. Crystal structure analysis led to the drug-receptor interaction model consisting of the guanidine (amidine) part conjugated to a powerful electron-withdrawing group bearing an H-bond accepting tip such as NO2 or CN, and the chloronicotinyl group enhances the binding to the receptor. The QSAR study not only supports the key pharmacophore but also clarifies the crucial involvement of the phamacokinetic factors in the insecticidal activity. A concept for strategic and rational design led to the discovery of alkylene-tethered bis-imidacloprid derivatives with unexpected systemic insecticidal property and the unique binding mechanism revealing the second cavity in the neonicotinoid receptor. © 2010 American Chemical Society. We have obtained nearly one thousand events of the Ξ- hyperon captured at rest in nuclear emulsion. Among them, production and decay of double-Λ hypernuclei was successfully found and analyzed for five events which correspond to five nuclear species with double strangeness. Preliminary results are discussed for the binding energy and interaction energy of two Λ hyperons. By comparison with older data, the excitation energy of the Λ Λ 10Be nucleus is also discussed. A new experiment,which is expected to provide 10 times more double-strangeness events than before, is introduced. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Source

This review article focuses on recent advances and challenges in the field of thermotropic cubic phases of the bicontinuous type (Cub bi) formed by low molecular mass molecules. In the Cub bi phases, the constituent molecules self-organize into 3D network structures, although local molecular diffusional motions are preserved to some extent. This review illustrates which types of molecules form such structures, and summarizes the latest developments in structural characterization. Moreover, their phase behaviors, and analogies and differences in comparison with other related systems such as lyotropic liquid crystals and block copolymers are discussed.
