More accurate modeling of the radiation embrittlement of a calibration metal on the basis of the shift criteria and envelopes of the dose-time dependences experimentally confirms that the modeling error corresponds to the variance band limits of the results of tests performed in control samples and reflects the structural nonuniformity of the metal of large-size blanks. It is recommended that high-quality VVER-1000 vessel steel with critical brittleness temperature from -44 to -78°C and from -78 to -121°C be used to eliminate the risk of brittle fracture of the core shells of GEN-IV VVER vessels. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

A procedure for calculating the normalized kinetic dependence of radionuclide efflux from unsealed fuel elements in the third-generation working cassettes (RK-3) of VVER-440 and the computational results are presented. The work is done by modeling the behavior of an unsealed fuel element in a working and stopped reactor using the RTOP-SA and RTOP-KGO computational codes. The effective hydraulic diameter of a defect can be evaluated using the computational results and experimental data obtained by monitoring the seal tightness of fuel-element cladding with pressure cycling at the power plant. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Results of numerical and experimental studies of the characteristics of a direct-acting on-off valve with spherical cut-off element and permanent magnet are presented. A mathematical model of the flow of a compressible working medium (air) in the flow-through segment of the valve is presented and numerical modeling with the use of the STAR-CCM+ CFD package is implemented. Results of the simulation are confirmed by experimental data. A technique of designing pneumatic systems that utilize valves with permanent magnet as the limiter of the maximal flow of the working medium is proposed. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

An applied technique of nonlinear analysis and the results of a determination of the limit plastic loads for tubular T-joints subjected to compound combined loading are presented. A T-joint is considered as an intersection of cylindrical shells. A numerical nonlinear analysis of the connectors is performed with the use of the method of finite elements and shell theory, taking into account geometric nonlinearity in a quadratic approximation, the theory of plastic fl ow, and the iteration procedure of the Newton–Raphson method. A new method based on a maximum criterion of the rate of growth of the relative plastic work is used to determine the limit plastic loads. Graphical results in the form of generalized curves of the limit plastic loads for three different sequences of application of a compound load are presented for a T-joint subjected to the joint action of internal pressure and a bending moment applied to a branch. © 2015 Springer Science+Business Media New York
