The Agua Amarga coastal aquifer, located in the southeast of Spain (Alicante province) has suffered a significant decrease in its piezometric levels due to its use to supply water to Alicante I and II desalination plants. In order to recover its natural levels and to preserve the salt marsh of ecological interest linked to the aquifer, whose origin is related to ancient saltworks, a pilot scheme based on depositing seawater over the salt marsh surface has been carried out from December 2009 to July 2010. As a result, piezometric levels have increased by around 2 and 3 m below the salt marsh and a general decrease in groundwater salinity of between 15 and 100 g/l has been measured. A flow-transport numerical model with SEAWAT is used to assess and evaluate the seawater depositing programme. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

The reaction between Pd(dba)2 and phosphino-amide ligands yielded the unexpected Pd(II) homoleptic complexes [Pd(o-Ph2PC6H4CO-NR)2] [R =iPr (1), Ph (2), 4-MeC6H4 (3), 4-FC6H4 (4)], in which an κ2-P,N coordination mode for diphenylphosphine-benzamidate ligands is observed. In order to induce amide protonation in the ligands and subsequent κ2-P,O coordination, compounds (1-4) were treated with HClO4(aq) to give cationic complexes [Pd(o-Ph2PC6H4CO-NHR)2][ClO 4]2 (5-8). These complexes and the analogous with iminophosphine ligands [Pd(o-Ph2PC6H4CH{double bond, long}N-R)2] [ClO4]2 [R =iPr (9), Ph (10)] can be alternatively obtained when [PdCl2(PhCN)2] is treated with AgClO4 in the presence of the corresponding ligand. The reaction of Pd(dba)2 with iminophosphines has also been explored, yielding in this case the Pd(0) derivatives [Pd(o-Ph2PC6H4CH{double bond, long}N-R)2] [R =iPr (11), Ph (12)]. X-ray structures of (3), (4), (5), (8) and (9) have been established, allowing an interesting comparative structural discussion. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new acetate-bridged dinuclear palladacycle with unsubstituted N-phenylpyrazole [{Pd(phpz)(μ-AcO)}2] 1 has been isolated and characterised, including an X-ray diffraction study. A survey of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) v. 5.31 looking for analogous dimeric C^N cyclopalladated complexes has been done, exploring the incidence of cisoid/transoid arrangements, the preferred conformation of the eight-membered ring formed in the double bridge, the Pd-Pd distance and the main factors that affect it. The reaction of 1 with NBu4OH yielded [{Pd(phpz)(μ-OH)} 2] 2 that has shown to be a complementary precursor of 1 in terms of acid/base reactivity. In this sense, both 1 and 2 are also well differentiated from halide precursors available to date. The preparation of selected complexes with potential applications in several fields, [Pd(phpz)(O^N)] O^N = N-p-chlorophenylsalycilaldiminate (N-pClsal) 3, picolinic acid (pic) 4; 8-hydroxiquinolinate (oxin) 5; 2-pyrrole-carboxaldeydate (2-pcal) 6, [Pd(phpz)(O^O)] O^O = salycilaldehydate (sal) 7 acetylacetonate (acac) 8, [{Pd(phpz)(μ-N^S)}2] N^S = 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolate (SMeimz) 11; [{Pd(phpz)(μ-N^O)}2] N^O = succinimidate (succ) 12; [{Pd(phpz)(μ-N^N)}2] (N^N = pyrazolate (pz) 13, has been achieved using 1 or 2 as starting materials in acid/base reactions. Dithiocarbamate [Pd(phpz)(S2CNEt2)] 9 and dithiophosphate [Pd(phpz){S(S)P(OEt)2}] 10 derivatives have been synthesised in related reactions, and the reactivity of 1 against neutral phoshine ligands has also been tested with the preparation of [Pd(phpz)(AcO)(PPh3)] 14. The crystal structures of compounds 7, 9, 11, 12 and 13 (this one obtained from a powder sample using synchrotron radiation) have also been established, and together with 1 are the first examples of complexes containing unsubstituted N-phenylpyrazole as cyclometallated backbone that have been deposited to date on the Cambridge Structural Database. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Agua Amarga coastal aquifer in southern Spain has been the subject of chemical and physical measurements since May 2008 in order to monitor the potential effects of water withdrawal for the Alicante desalination plants on the salt marsh linked to the aquifer. Electrical conductivity contour maps and depth profiles, piezometric-head contour maps, hydrochemical analyses, isotopic characterizations and temperature depth profiles show not only the saltwater intrusion caused by water abstraction, but also the presence of a pronounced convective density-driven flow below the salt marsh; this flow was a consequence of saltwork activity in the early 1900s which generated saline groundwater contamination. The influence of a seawater recharge programme, carried out over the salt marsh in 2009-2010, on the diminishing groundwater salinity and the recovery of groundwater levels is also studied. Based on collected field data, the project provides a deeper understanding of how these successive anthropogenic interventions have modified flow and mixing processes in Agua Amarga aquifer. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
