The purpose of this study was to evaluate the losses in pulp vitalites occurring in teeth adjacent to the mobilized segment following premaxillary distraction osteogenesis. Twelve patients (4 males and 8 females) constituted the study group. Electrical pulp test was used to assess the vitality of the upper first bicuspids, canines and lateral and central incisors adjacent to the mobilized segment. Tests were quantitatively performed preoperatively, and on the 5th, 7th, 10th, 30th and 60th postoperative days. The affection and healing processes of the 24 upper central and lateral incisors examined were in parallel with each other. The affection and healing processes of the 12 canines which were vital preoperatively and included in the statistical analysis were significantly different from the other teeth when the vitality levels of the canines and small first bicuspids adjacent to the osteotomy line were assessed. However, a positive response was achieved in all the teeth on the 60th postoperative day. No sensorial loss was detected in small bicuspids which were adjacent to osteotomy line, and however, not present in the segment. In order to preserve the pulpal blood during osteotomies of the jaws, a safety margin of 5 mm is recommended between the apices of the teeth and the osteotomy line. Premaxillary distraction osteogenesis is a safe procedure regarding the pulpal changes of the teeth.© Gülhane Askeri Tip Akademisi 2012.

This study aimed to determine the knowledge, attitude and behavior level of medical school students about genetically modified organisms. This crosssectional study was conducted between February and March 2010. The socio-demographical characteristics of the participants and their data about knowledge, attitudes and behaviors on genetically modified organisms were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researchers. Among all the participants 71.9% (n=308), 56.9 % (n=243) and 83.2% (n=356) stated that people in the community were not adequately informed about genetically modified foods, they considered production of genetically modified foods is risky for all living organisms in the nature, the food they currently preferred might include some genetically modified products, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference among the classes of the students regarding their attitudes towards the suggestion "there is no harm in consuming genetically modified foods" (p<0.001). This difference probably originated from the observation that second grade students had a more suspicious attitude compared to the ones in the other grades. The risk perception of the participants of our study, who are the future workforce in health sector, towards the genetically modified foods was found to be high while their level of information was low. It is recommended that educational activities aiming to eliminate the knowledge gap be included in the curriculum plans. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2010.

Military preventive medicine aims at preventing disease, promoting health and prolonging life, researching relationship between health and disease, and the occurrence and development of diseases, and providing countermeasures against risk factors before the disease develops in soldiers at the operation field. Turkish Armed Forces have contributed to various peacekeeping missions since 1950. The medical support given for soldiers in the operation field is provided with relatively primitive infrastructure. Additionally a safe service environment evolves into a completely new form of barracks or a war-fighting environment with insufficient conditions. From this point of view considering plannings associated with preventive medicine performed before operations has gained importance. Peacekeeping operations will likely continue in the developing world. In this review article it was aimed to discuss the current approaches about the medical support that will be given to operational troops. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2010.

Vitamin D is thought to have a probable helpful effect on the action of insulin. There is little information regarding this relationship in prediabetic elderly subjects in the literature. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in insulin sensitivity and metabolic parameters according to vitamin D levels in prediabetic elderly subjects. Seventy nine elderly subjects (31 male, 48 female; mean age: 75.8±6.04 years) who admitted to the Department of Geriatry of Gulhane Military Medical Faculty were included in the study. According to plasma concentrations of 25(OH)D, the subjects were categorized in 2 groups: those with a level lower than 20 ng/mL (vitamin D deficiency: Group I) and those with a level higher than 20 ng/mL (vitamin D insufficiency [20-30 ng/mL] or vitamin D normal [>30 ng/mL]; Grup II). Serum insulin and HOMA-IR levels in Group I were significantly higher than those in Group II (p=0.025 and p=0.021, respectively). In all the subjects there was a statistically significant negative correlation between plasma 25(OH)D levels and HOMA-IR and insulin levels (r=-0.287 and r=-0.302, respectively). Our results indicate that insulin sensitivity may decrease in prediabetic elderly subjects with vitamin D deficiency. Further randomized, controlled, and prospective studies are necessary to investigate the relationship between vitamin D and these parameters in prediabetic elderly subjects. © Gülhane Askeri Tip Akademisi 2011.

Healthcare professionals are exposed to many job hazards. Among these there are infections, injuries, allergies, violence and stress. These risks can be reduced by following the rules of job safety and prevention from injuries. In this descriptive study universe was the first grade and senior medical students. Questionnaires were prepared by the researchers. Permissions required were obtained from ethical committee and medical faculty administration. All of the first grade and senior students were aimed to reach, however 68 out of 69 first grade students (98.5%) and 77 out of 113 senior students (70.1%) completed the questionnaire and entered into the study. The average knowledge level about the diseases transmitted with body fluids and blood was 83.8% in first grade students and 90.9% in senior students, and the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.10). The average knowledge level of first grade students about the occupational exposure precautions was higher than that of the senior students, and this difference was statistically significant considering the use of eye glasses and doctor coat (p=0.02 and 0.01, respectively). In this study, senior students' knowledge level about health risks arising from occupational exposure was not as high as expected when compared to first grade students although they had more knowledge in comparison to first grade students. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2011.

The purpose of this research was to determine risky behaviors of individuals with ages of ≥65 years living in Ankara Province Bilkent Private Care Center for at least last one year toward home accidents. Of the 90 elderly individuals living in the private care center, 83.3% accepted to participate in the study. The most frequent risky behaviors of elderly individuals toward home accidents were "don't get assistance while using wardrobes", "walk around the room without turning on lamp shade at night", "getting up from bed without having some rest in the bed". However the premier safety behaviors were "controlled moving toward open door, window, wardrobe doors while bending and erecting", "placing goods frequently used on an easily accessible place", "not to step onto wet surface without slipper after getting out of shower". An important part of nursing interventions is to evaluate risky and safety behaviors of elderly individuals toward home accidents. In conclusion nursing homes are the secure places in terms of home accidents, however these places are important with regard to increasing awareness of the elderly individuals about the risky behaviors and supporting their safety attitudes for their guard against accidents and increasing the life quality of the elderly people. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2011.

For the individuals it is important to be conscious and perform testicular self examination regarding early diagnosis in testicular cancer. The aim of this study was to assess the education given to young adult males about testicular self examination. Planned as a kind of intervention, this study was performed on 329 soldiers. A conference was given to all participants about the symptoms and early diagnosis of testicular cancer, and performing testicular self examination. The participants were requested to fill in a questionnaire under supervision before the education, and the part of the questionnaire involving the test of knowledge was performed again after the completion of the education. Of all the participants, 48.3% declared that they had never heard of testicular cancer before, 20.7% declared that they had heard about testicular self examination, and 8.8% declared that they had performed testicular self examination at least once in their life time. Of the participants, 47.4% and 97% indicated that they did not know the importance of testicular self examination in early diagnosis of testicular cancer, and would like to learn testicular self examination, respectively. The mean of correct answers given to the test of knowledge by the participants before the education was 4.06, whereas it was 11.42 after the education. This increase was statistically significant (p<0.001). When the effectiveness of the intervention used in the study was assessed, the rate of failure of 79.9% before the education decreased to 10.0% following the education. The education given to the participants about testicular self examination in this study contributed to the increase of the level of knowledge of participants. Interest in learning testicular self examination may be created and the awareness of people who are willing may be increased by means of education and campaigns. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2010.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between positive and negative affect levels and P wave variability, which is a known risk factor for atrial fibrillation in healthy young males. Sixty six physically healthy male subjects between the ages of 21 and 30 were included in the study. Twelve derivation electrocardiogram was taken and standart echocardiographic evaluation was made in the cases in the study. P-wave variability was defined as the difference between the longest and shortest P wave duration. Positive and negative affect levels of the cases were determined with Positive and Negative Affect Schedule. Subject were divided into two groups as "high" and "low" according to their scores of positive and negative affect levels. There was not a correlation between positive affect level and P-wave variability whereas there was a significant correlation between negative affect level and P-wave variability. Results of this study show that there is a relationship between negative affect level and P-wave variability in healthy young males. The findings are in consistent with the findings of previous studies investigating the relationship between negative emotions such as anxiety and hostility and P-wave variability. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2010.
