Vitamin D is thought to have a probable helpful effect on the action of insulin. There is little information regarding this relationship in prediabetic elderly subjects in the literature. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in insulin sensitivity and metabolic parameters according to vitamin D levels in prediabetic elderly subjects. Seventy nine elderly subjects (31 male, 48 female; mean age: 75.8±6.04 years) who admitted to the Department of Geriatry of Gulhane Military Medical Faculty were included in the study. According to plasma concentrations of 25(OH)D, the subjects were categorized in 2 groups: those with a level lower than 20 ng/mL (vitamin D deficiency: Group I) and those with a level higher than 20 ng/mL (vitamin D insufficiency [20-30 ng/mL] or vitamin D normal [>30 ng/mL]; Grup II). Serum insulin and HOMA-IR levels in Group I were significantly higher than those in Group II (p=0.025 and p=0.021, respectively). In all the subjects there was a statistically significant negative correlation between plasma 25(OH)D levels and HOMA-IR and insulin levels (r=-0.287 and r=-0.302, respectively). Our results indicate that insulin sensitivity may decrease in prediabetic elderly subjects with vitamin D deficiency. Further randomized, controlled, and prospective studies are necessary to investigate the relationship between vitamin D and these parameters in prediabetic elderly subjects. © Gülhane Askeri Tip Akademisi 2011. The purpose of this research was to determine risky behaviors of individuals with ages of ≥65 years living in Ankara Province Bilkent Private Care Center for at least last one year toward home accidents. Of the 90 elderly individuals living in the private care center, 83.3% accepted to participate in the study. The most frequent risky behaviors of elderly individuals toward home accidents were "don't get assistance while using wardrobes", "walk around the room without turning on lamp shade at night", "getting up from bed without having some rest in the bed". However the premier safety behaviors were "controlled moving toward open door, window, wardrobe doors while bending and erecting", "placing goods frequently used on an easily accessible place", "not to step onto wet surface without slipper after getting out of shower". An important part of nursing interventions is to evaluate risky and safety behaviors of elderly individuals toward home accidents. In conclusion nursing homes are the secure places in terms of home accidents, however these places are important with regard to increasing awareness of the elderly individuals about the risky behaviors and supporting their safety attitudes for their guard against accidents and increasing the life quality of the elderly people. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2011. Military preventive medicine aims at preventing disease, promoting health and prolonging life, researching relationship between health and disease, and the occurrence and development of diseases, and providing countermeasures against risk factors before the disease develops in soldiers at the operation field. Turkish Armed Forces have contributed to various peacekeeping missions since 1950. The medical support given for soldiers in the operation field is provided with relatively primitive infrastructure. Additionally a safe service environment evolves into a completely new form of barracks or a war-fighting environment with insufficient conditions. From this point of view considering plannings associated with preventive medicine performed before operations has gained importance. Peacekeeping operations will likely continue in the developing world. In this review article it was aimed to discuss the current approaches about the medical support that will be given to operational troops. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2010. Source

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between positive and negative affect levels and P wave variability, which is a known risk factor for atrial fibrillation in healthy young males. Sixty six physically healthy male subjects between the ages of 21 and 30 were included in the study. Twelve derivation electrocardiogram was taken and standart echocardiographic evaluation was made in the cases in the study. P-wave variability was defined as the difference between the longest and shortest P wave duration. Positive and negative affect levels of the cases were determined with Positive and Negative Affect Schedule. Subject were divided into two groups as "high" and "low" according to their scores of positive and negative affect levels. There was not a correlation between positive affect level and P-wave variability whereas there was a significant correlation between negative affect level and P-wave variability. Results of this study show that there is a relationship between negative affect level and P-wave variability in healthy young males. The findings are in consistent with the findings of previous studies investigating the relationship between negative emotions such as anxiety and hostility and P-wave variability. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2010. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the losses in pulp vitalites occurring in teeth adjacent to the mobilized segment following premaxillary distraction osteogenesis. Twelve patients (4 males and 8 females) constituted the study group. Electrical pulp test was used to assess the vitality of the upper first bicuspids, canines and lateral and central incisors adjacent to the mobilized segment. Tests were quantitatively performed preoperatively, and on the 5th, 7th, 10th, 30th and 60th postoperative days. The affection and healing processes of the 24 upper central and lateral incisors examined were in parallel with each other. The affection and healing processes of the 12 canines which were vital preoperatively and included in the statistical analysis were significantly different from the other teeth when the vitality levels of the canines and small first bicuspids adjacent to the osteotomy line were assessed. However, a positive response was achieved in all the teeth on the 60th postoperative day. No sensorial loss was detected in small bicuspids which were adjacent to osteotomy line, and however, not present in the segment. In order to preserve the pulpal blood during osteotomies of the jaws, a safety margin of 5 mm is recommended between the apices of the teeth and the osteotomy line. Premaxillary distraction osteogenesis is a safe procedure regarding the pulpal changes of the teeth.© Gülhane Askeri Tip Akademisi 2012. Source
