Bundle conductors are widely used in the high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission in order to possess a higher line capacity, to optimize the electromagnetic environment, and to narrow down the width of transmission line corridor. By the use of successive image method, the finite element method and formula of BPA and CISPR, the total field, ion current density, audible noise, radio interference, and corona loss of two kinds of conductors, i. e., 5×LGJ-1120/50 and 6×LGJ-900/40 were assessed, respectively. The technical advantages and disadvantages were compared in detail. The results show that both 5×LGJ-1120/50 and 6×LGJ-900/40 can meet the requirements of the electromagnetic environment under the condition that the cross section area of both conductors are approximately same. However, it is worth pointing out that the conductor with 5×LGJ-1120/50 is more competitive than that with 6×LGJ-900/40 if the investment of the power line is concerned.

Based on on-site testing results of radio interference (RI) and audible noise (AN) generated from 330 kV and 750 kV power transmission lines as well as that from the tested portion of single circuit 1000 kV transmission line and double circuit transmission line in China, and according to theoretical calculation results and referring to related situations abroad, following suggestions on limited values in related standards and their calculation methods for RI and AN of domestic UHV and EHV transmission lines in China are proposed, they are: the limited value of radio interference for the areas with attitude lower than 1000 km should taken in the range from 55 dB to 58 dB in clear day and the limited value of audible noise should taken as 55 dB while the conductors are wet; the radio interference level of 750 kV and 1000 kV transmission lines should be calculated by excitation function and the methods such as empirical formula and so on should not be adopted.

The variation of the spacing between intrabundle conductors directly affects the surface electric field of transmission conductor, and then the audible noise and radio-interference of transmission line, the ground electric field under the transmission line, the natural power and even the width of corridor are affected in different extent. Taking 750 kV transmission line for example, the affections of intrabundle conductor spacing on audible noise, radio-interference, ground electric field, natural power and width of corridor were calculated and analyzed, and some suggestions on rational choice of the spacing between intra-bundle conductors of 750 kV transmission line were proposed.
