The rising pace of technological change in information and communications technology (ICT) has provoked technological convergence by providing a new mode of diversification. This paper investigates the nature of ICTbased converging technologies by examining comparative empirical evidence on converging versus nonconverging technologies in relation to the following issues: patent application trends, concentration across technologies, the concentration of patenting activity across firms, R&D efforts, and a technology impact index. For this study, a new operational definition of ICT-based converging technology is derived, and a massive quantity of patents, up to around 600,000, is analyzed. This study follows the International Patent Classification as well as the modified European Commission's industry classification system for the classification of technologies and industries, respectively. © 2013 ETRI. This study is related to the acquisition of physiological signals of human emotions and the recognition of human emotions using such physiological signals. To acquire physiological signals, seven emotions are evoked through stimuli. Regarding the induced emotions, the results of skin temperature, photoplethysmography, electrodermal activity, and an electrocardiogram are recorded and analyzed as physiological signals. The suitability and effectiveness of the stimuli are evaluated by the subjects themselves. To address the problem of the emotions not being recognized, we introduce a methodology for a recognizer using prototype-based learning and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The design involves two main phases: i) PSO selects the P% of the patterns to be treated as prototypes of the seven emotions; ii) PSO is instrumental in the formation of the core set of features. The experiments show that a suitable selection of prototypes and a substantial reduction of the feature space can be accomplished, and the recognizer formed in this manner is characterized by high recognition accuracy for the seven emotions using physiological signals. © 2013 ETRI. In this paper, an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-based minimum end-to-end delay (MED) distributed routing scheme for mobile backhaul wireless mesh networks is proposed. The proposed scheme selects routing paths based on OFDMA subcarrier synchronization control, subcarrier availability, and delay. In the proposed scheme, OFDMA is used to transmit frames between mesh routers using type-I hybrid automatic repeat request over multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Compared with other distributed routing algorithms, such as most forward within radius R, farthest neighbor routing, nearest neighbor routing, and nearest with forwarding progress, simulation results show that the proposed MED routing can reduce end-to-end delay and support highly reliable routing using only local information of neighbor nodes. © 2013 ETRI. Dual-mode terminals (DMTs) equipped with cellular and WLAN interfaces have become popular in recent years. Users of DMTs can enjoy high-speed WLAN Internet access and wide area Internet access to cellular networks. However, a DMT may consume power inefficiently when discovering a WLANwith inherently limited service coverage. In this letter, we propose to use smart WLAN discovery (SWD) to minimize thepower consumption required for WLAN discovery. To minimize the power consumption of a DMT, an SWD DMT activates its WLAN interface only when the DMT transfers data within the WLAN coverage area. The simulation results of SWD show an improved power-saving performance compared to previousWLAN discovery schemes. © 2013 ETRI. Source

This paper presents a security scheme to detect the data forgery in the vehicle black box system. The proposed scheme uses chained hash and symmetric-key encryption to check whether the data is forged or modified. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can find and notify the point of the falsification. Based on our experiment, we believe that the proposed scheme could be a practical solution to improve the reliability of the black box data. © 2014 IEEE. Source
