In this study, we used immunohistochemical techniques to determine the cell type of leucine-enkephalin (Leu-ENK)-immunoreactive cells in the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) pituitary. Immunoreactive cells were scattered throughout the pars distalis except for the dorso-caudal portion. These cells were immuno-positive for luteinizing hormone (LH), but they were immuno-negative for adrenocorticotrophic, growth, and thyroid-stimulating hormones, as well as prolactin. Immunoelectron microscopy demonstrated that Leu-ENK-like substance and LH co-localized within the same secretory granules. Leu-ENK secreted from gonadotrophs may participate in LH secretion in an autocrine fashion, and/or may participate in the release of sex steroids together with LH. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Source

While materials development is promoted by the progress of measurement and analysis techniques, advanced materials can contribute to improving measurement and analysis. Here, fluorescent materials development is reported, mainly on X-ray scintillator YAlO3 (YAP). Investigations included synthesis of the single-phase YAP by the polymerized complex method, film coating, and its application to neutron detection. The YAP:Ce has been put to practical use as a fast scintillator for NaI, which is an example that the advanced material should improve measurement and analysis. © 2015 The Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry. The distribution of the two-phonon γ-vibrational collectivity in the rotating triaxial odd-A nucleus Nb103, which is one of the three nuclides for which experimental data were reported recently, is calculated in the framework of the particle vibration coupling model based on the cranked shell model plus random phase approximation. This framework was previously utilized for analyses of the zero- and one-phonon bands in another mass region and is applied to the two-phonon band for the first time. In the present calculation, three sequences of two-phonon bands share collectivity almost equally at finite rotation whereas the K=Ω+4 state is the purest at zero rotation. © 2011 American Physical Society. We study the character change of the pionic condensation at finite isospin chemical potential μI by adopting the linear sigma model as a nonlocal interaction between quarks. At low |μI| the condensation is purely bosonic, then the Cooper pairing around the Fermi surface grows gradually as |μI| increases. This q-q̄ pairing is weakly coupled in comparison with the case of the q-q pairing that leads to color superconductivity. © 2010 The American Physical Society. Source

Objective: To examine potential associations between socioeconomic factors and self-rated health among a national sample of Japanese men aged 50-59 years between 2005 and 2010, including the 2008 global financial crisis. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Randomly selected 2515 census areas from a total of 1.8 million census areas in Japan. Participants: This study utilised data from a national, longitudinal survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Starting in 2005, 16 738 Japanese men aged 50-59 years were recruited and sent a questionnaire each year. We analysed data for the 6-year period (2005-2010) from participants who had worked for over 20 years in the same industry (n=9727). Main outcome measures: We focused on worsening self-rated health status by occupation, education and employment contract. Results: Working in the manufacturing industry was associated with worsening self-rated health scores when compared to those working in management (HR=1.19; 95% CI 1.04 to 1.37). A relationship between education level and worsening self-rated health was also identified as follows: junior high school (HR=1.49; 95% CI 1.31 to 1.69), high school (HR=1.29; 95% CI 1.17 to 1.42), and vocational college (HR=1.25; 95% CI 1.07 to 1.46), when compared with those holding universitylevel qualifications. Precarious employment (HR=1.17; 95% CI 1.00 to 1.37) was also associated with worsening self-rated health status in the current study. Conclusions: This study suggests that working in manufacturing for more than 20 years and having lower education levels may have a significant impact on the self-rated health of middle-aged Japanese men. This may reflect a progressive decline in Japanese working conditions following the global financial crisis and/or the impact of lower socioeconomic status. Source
