Pore solutions play an important role in the shear strength of soils. A series of shearing and microcosmic tests are performed on the samples saturated with NaCl solutions with different concentrations to investigate the effects of pore solution concentrations on the effective strength of clay. The experimental results show that the pore solution concentrations have strong effects on cohesion of samples. The cohesion decreases with the increase of pore solution concentrations. As the concentration approaches 0.1 mol/L, the cohesion decreases to below 0 kPa. The cohesion depends on the block effect of physical and chemical forces between particles on the interparticle sliding. The repulsion decreases with the increase of the pore solution concentration which makes the interparticle sliding more easily. Due to the development of real pore pressure in the samples, the cohesion decreases to below 0 kPa. The environmental scanning electron microscopy tests on the microstructures confirm that clays form flocculation in NaCl solution and form aggregation in water. ©, 2015, Chinese Society of Civil Engineering. Red clay is one of the special soils which contains cementing material. Compared with common cohesive soils, the strength characteristics of red clay are more complicated. Some direct shear tests are performed on the unsaturated red clay samples with water and propanetriol solution; and the experimental results show that the strength and cohesion of samples exhibit double peaks of strength increasing with the increase of solution content; while the internal friction angle does not change. Besides, the strength of samples diminishes obviously with the propanetriol solution instead of water. Based on Bishop's effective stress for unsaturated soil and the characteristic of pore distribution acquired by NMR tests, the impact mechanism of pore distribution characteristic on strength is discucsed, and a conclusion is drawn that pore distribution characteristic has much effect on strength of red clay samples.

The clogging of drainage board filtration membranes directly affects the effects of newly-dredged mud reinforced by the vacuum preloading drainage consolidation method, and the vacuum loading mode is one of the main reasons that cause clogging of drainage board filtration membranes. The drainage board filtration membranes with 5 kinds of different equivalent diameters are used to reinforce newly-dredged mud by controlling vacuum loading modes in laboratory. The surface settlement and vacuum degree at different depths of drainage board and soil are monitored during the tests, and the permeability of drainage board filtration membranes are tested after tests. The results show that for the vacuum load without gradient or with large gradient, the effects of vacuum preloading drainage consolidation method to reinforce newly-dredged mud are poor, and drainage board filtration membranes are easily clogged. The smaller the equivalent diameter of drainage board filtration membrane the more severe the clogging. The permeability of drainage board filtration membranes decreases after clogging that causes unfavorable effects on soil drainage consolidation. It is suggested that the equivalent diameter of drainage board filtration membranes should be larger, the vacuum load should be graded, and each vacuum load gradient shouldn't be too large in engineering practice by using the vacuum preloading method to treat newly-dredged mud. © 2016, Editorial Office of Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering. This paper presents a systematic approach to estimate the cable tension when flexural stiffness and flexibility support is taken into account. To estimate the cable tension accurately, a theoretical model considering flexural stiffness and flexibility support is formulated, and formulas for estimating cable tension and boundary conditions are obtained. When the flexibility support stiffness is infinite, the formulas are the same as the formulas when the influence of flexibility support is counted. Three experiments of flexibility support stiffness were conducted to verify the estimation approach, and the experimental results showed that when the flexibility support stiffness is small, the cable tension estimation deviated significantly from the actual cable tension, and that the formula considering flexural stiffness and flexibility support stiffness can estimate the cable tension accurately.

Excel VBA is an object-oriented programming language with the characteristics of simplicity, practicality and powerful development function. So it was adopted effectively by vast engineers in numerous fields on data processing because of many advantages. On the basis of studying the correlative technologies of Excel VBA, we try to apply it to the data processing of magnetic surveying in the ground magnetic prospecting. We also design and programm the so-called "Processing system on ground magnetic datum" successfully. The application of the system in some magnetic prospecting projects shows the improving of work efficiency and decreasing of errors probability at present.

Based on an engineering example, a supporting method for a mixed high slope, which has stone retaining wall on the top and permanent slope in the middle and deep excavation at the bottom, is indroduced. According to different working conditions and by using different parameters, calculations of excavation support at the pit bottom and permanent slope support on the ground (after the backfill of excavation) should be carricel out. Supporting structures should satisfy the requirements of both temporary and permanent slopes.

Through a practical project, it is discussed how to make full use of the existing retaining piles and to adopt the combination of long and short piles, the theory of soil arching as well as the way of increasing layers of bracings so as to complete the supports of the foundation pit of the basement when it is changed from 3 stories to 4 ones. During the construction process, the safety of the retaining structures and the rationality of the approach used in the design are proved through the analysis of the monitoring data. The experience of this project has the guiding significance for similar projects.

The reinforcement measurements at the base of original deep excavation are discussed for the increasing of basement, Utilize the existing support piles and increase sparse long pile of the back to meet anti-overturning, uplift resistance requirements; Usage of the different stiffness of single piles producing soil arching effect, reduces the old pile forces to meet the shaft strength requirements; Increase number of layers of the support to complete the additional basement excavation. Through information construction and dynamic design, deformation and stress monitoring analyze the retaining structure and the safety of the surrounding environment, and forecast trends. To ensure the security of retaining structure, monitoring results prove that technical measures for supporting design are reasonable, the experience gained in this project with reference to similar projects.
