Scalable end-user access to Big Data is critical for effective data analysis and value creation. Optique will bring about a paradigm shift for data access by\n\n* providing a semantic end-to-end connection between users and data sources\n* enabling users to rapidly formulate intuitive queries using familiar vocabularies and conceptualisations\n* seamlessly integrating data spread across multiple distributed data sources, including streaming sources\n* exploiting massive parallelism for scalability far beyond traditional RDBMSs\n\nand thus reducing the turnaround time for information requests to minutes rather than days.\n\nThese objectives will be achieved by bringing together leading experts and cutting edge technology from diverse communities to develop an extensible platform that will provide a complete and generic solution to the data access challenges posed by Big Data.\n\nThe platform will: (i) Use an ontology and declarative mappings to capture user conceptualisations and to transform user queries into complete, correct and highly optimised queries over the data sources; (ii) Integrate distributed heterogeneous sources, including streams; (iii) Exploit massively parallel technologies and holistic optimisations to maximise performance; (iv) Include tools to support query formulation and ontology and mapping management; (v) Use semi-automatic bootstrapping of ontologies and mappings and query driven ontology construction to minimise installation overhead.\n\nDevelopment of the platform will be informed by and continuously evaluated against the requirements of complex real-world challenges, with two large European companies providing the project with comprehensive use cases, and access to user groups and TB scale data sets.\n\nExperience from the use case deployments will be used to develop high quality tutoring and training resources, and to engage in an aggressive dissemination and exploitation program aimed at achieving the widest possible uptake of Optique technology.

Two academic groups and eight SMEs who all work on different aspects of protein engineering will collaborate and produce a website that will consist of a portal with an embedded workbench to provide users a self-service system for in silico protein engineering. This interactive self-service portal will give users access to a wide variety of protein engineering facilities and information systems, and will allow them to interactively work with a comprehensive set of well-documented, well-integrated computational protein engineering tools. The databases that will be provided will be curated, and the software and protocols will be validated by performing a variety of protein engineering experiments on a series of enzyme classes. The portal and the interactive workbench will be freely available, and they will be solidly based in modern information technology. The usability for protein engineering will be thoroughly experimentally validated.

The ultimate goal of OpenCube project is to facilitate (a) publishing of high-quality linked statistical data, and (b) reusing distributed linked statistical datasets to perform advanced data analytics and visualizations. Towards this end, OpenCube project will develop open source software tools in terms of (a) standalone applications and (b) extensions of two linked data management platforms, namely Swirrls PublishMyData and fluidOps Information Workbench, for publishing and reusing high-quality linked statistical data.Although the Open Government Data (OGD) movement promised to provide a number of benefits, recent studies show that its full potential has not yet realized. The difficulty in exploiting open data seems surprising if we consider the huge importance data have in modern societies e.g. in business intelligence, research models and evidence based policy-making.The main tenet of OpenCube project is that the real value of OGD will unveil from performing data analytics and advanced visualizations on top of open statistical data that were previously resided in disparate sources and can now be combined to provide unexpected and unexplored insights. However, statistical data need to be formulated and integrated as linked Data Cubes characterized by dimensions, slices and measures in order to unveil their full potential and value.Towards this end, the OpenCube project aims at developing software tools to address the particular requirements of Data Cubes, thus enabling the efficient and easy publishing and reuse of open statistical data. In particular the OpenCube project will support (a) public bodies to publish linked statistical data of high quality in an easy way and (b) European SMEs to combine linked open statistical data with other data (e.g. enterprises own data) and perform advanced data analytics and visualizations in a cost effective manner.The OpenCube foreseen results include:\t The OpenCube toolkit comprising standalone tools for publishing, visualizing and performing data analytics on top of linked statistical data.\t The OpenCube extension of the PublishMyData platform.\t The OpenCube extension of the Information Workbench platform.\t The OpenCube Pilots in three public authorities and businesses to validate and prove the usability and effectiveness of the developed tools and guidelines.

An apparatus (1) for selectively dispensing liquids, such as paint colorants. The apparatus comprises container assemblies (3) with a container (4) and a pump (5). A pump conduit (9) connects the pump to a valve assembly. A recirculation conduit (10) connects the container to the valve assembly bypassing the pump. The valve assembly is configured to be switched between a dispensing position and a recirculation position closing off the dispense conduit. Method of preventing segregation of a multiphase liquid in a pump conduit between a container and a dispense conduit. A valve assembly between the pump conduit and the dispense conduit closes off the dispense conduit while it opens a recirculation conduit between the container and the valve assembly. The liquid is circulated via a circuit formed by the container (4), the pump conduit (9), the valve assembly and the recirculation unit (10).

A tri-chamber nutating pump is disclosed which includes two pump chambers disposed within a pump housing that accommodates a nutating piston. A reciprocating compensating piston is also provided with its own compensating housing that is connected to the outlet. As a cumulative output from the first two pump chambers reaches its maximum level, the compensating piston is pushed into the outlet or through a passage to reduce the output of the first two chambers and avoid splashing. As the output from the first two chambers reaches its minimum level, the compensating piston is withdrawn from the outlet or through a passage thereby increasing the output of the third chamber to its maximum level when the output from the first two pump chambers reaches its minimum level.

An actuator system having a stationary circular array of mechanical devices. The actuator system includes two stationary motors: one motor to rotate the actuator implement around the circular array of mechanical devices until the desired mechanical device is reached; and a second motor to rotate the actuator implement into engagement with an actuator pin of the mechanical device. A nozzle includes a three-sided or U-shaped stationary enclosure, together with a movable gate that completes the enclosure and forms an adjustable size nozzle outlet. As the gate closes after a dispense is complete, a controlled flow of residual liquid exits the nozzle outlet to avoid any additional displacement, thus preventing the undesirable effect of liquid being squeezed out of the nozzle outlet as the gate closes. Conversely, when the gate opens, this sniff back action operates in reverse, thereby filling the nozzle outlet and preventing air from filling the nozzle.
