Flash Cooling® technology developed by Fives Stein uses a high concentration of hydrogen in the cooling gas and optimized blowing conditions to achieve the necessary cooling rates for high strength steels (HSS) and water mist with nitrogen for Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS). According to Five Stein's design and experience of industrial operation, the blowing velocity is limited to 42% of the Mach number to limit an excessive gas impingement effect on the strip. The Mach number and the impingement effect remain constant when increasing the H2 content thanks to the lower gas density. The key advantages of this new technology over the alternative conventional systems using a water quench are the flexibility given to control the cooling rates and the strip end temperature in a wide range, from medium slow cooling up to ultra fast cooling. The other advantages include strip cooling is uniform and the atmosphere separation systems to control dry and wet furnace sections.
