A hydrophobic monomer(DM-16) was synthesized from N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and 1-bromohexadecane, and then the hydrophobic association terpolymer, PADM-16, was synthesized from acrylamide, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid and DM-16 by aqueous solution polymerization. PADM-16 was characterized by means of IR, 1H NMR, SEM and fluorescence spectrum, and its thickening effect for acid liquor was investigated. The results showed that there was hydrophobic association in PADM-16 aqueous solution and its acid dissolving time was 100 min. With increasing PADM-16 concentration, the viscosity of the thickened acid liquor increased. PADM-16 has good acid resistance and thermal stability. When HCl dosage was 20%(w), the viscosity of the thickened acid liquor could still reach 57 mPa·s, and its thermal stability was 84.2% and 65.0% at 60℃ and 90℃, respectively. Under the conditions of 30℃, 170 s-1 and 120 min, the shear stability of the thickened acid liquor with PADM-16 was 90.1%. © 2015, SINOPEC Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Industry.
