Simone Martini of Milan, Italy, was recently named the 2017 recipient of the ADI-Home Instead Family Carer of the Year Award. He is being recognized for the meaningful and positive impact he has made on the lives of those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other dementias and their families with his AL(z)–CINEMA initiative, the first film-event to raise social awareness ever made in Italy. The ADI-Home Instead Family Carer of the Year Award recognizes the work of unpaid family carers who help improve the quality of life for the people they care for and the greater community. It is through initiatives such as these that we can help families across the globe erase the stigma associated with the disease and educate a greater cross-section of the community about its unpredictable nature.” For the last six years Simone Martini has provided care for his aging parents, Giuseppe, 78, and Anna Maria, 77. In late 2011, Anna Maria was diagnosed with an early-moderate form of dementia, causing Simone to come face-to-face with a disease that would slowly take his mother away from him. Though this diagnosis was and remains difficult, he continues to find ways to make the most of the time they have together. Four years in to his caring journey, Simone learned of training sessions for carers offered by the Federazione Alzheimer Italia, an organization designed to improve understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. After attending a course, he joined their efforts to combat the stigma of the disease and raise awareness for its impact on families. Here he was inspired and created the concept of AL(z)–CINEMA, or “the wrong movie.” The concept: show Italian moviegoers a few minutes of a different film than they paid to see, before switching over to the correct one, providing a momentary peek into the confusion the more than one million Italians who live with the disease experience every day. The program has been a great success, with more than 150,000 moviegoers in 400 theaters experiencing AL(z)–CINEMA to date. “The work that I’m able to do for Alzheimer’s (disease and dementia) is an indirect, but concrete way for me to help my mother,” said Martini. “This award serves as a tremendous reminder of how far we have come and how far we have yet to go.” Martini was presented the award at the 32nd International Conference on ADI in Kyoto, April 26-29. ▶Aim. The aim fo the study was to collect the opinions of dementia caregivers to assess their expectations and perception of dementia treatment effectiveness. ▶Methods. We interviewed dementia caregivers by use of a questionnaire published on the Federazione Alzheimer Italia website. The questionnaire was divided in three sections: 1) information on the dementia patient; 2) information on perception of dementia treatment effectiveness; 3) information on caregivers. ▶Results. During the three months of access time, 439 questionnaires were completed and 369 were approved for the study. Of these, 329 collected information on caregivers. Out of the patients, 76% had a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease, 73% were female, and the mean age was 77 years. Of the caregivers, 67% were female and the average age was 47 years. The overall mean score of the perceived effect of dementia drugs was low: 1.6, IC 95% 1,4-1,8. Caregivers' specific expectations and criticisms concerning treatment effectiveness and changes in their lifestyles were identified. ▶Conclusions. This study collected informations from a large cohort of caregivers on their perceptions of dementia treatment and highlights the need to find a pharmaceutical treatment to ensure a resolution of symptoms and improve outcomes of dementia.

Background and aims: To collect opinions, perceptions, and expectations on the therapeutic benefits of drug treatment for dementia and the impact on the care of the patient in a large sample of caregivers. Only few studies deal with this topic in a small number of participants. Methods: This used an ad-hoc online questionnaire to collect the opinions of caregivers of patients with dementia and assess their expectations and perceptions of the therapeutic benefits of drug treatments. The questionnaire was accessible for nearly 4 months on the Federazione Alzheimer Italia website and had three sections: (1) information on the patient with dementia; (2) information on the caregiver's perception of the therapeutic benefits of drug treatments; (3) information on caregivers. To evaluate the relationship between the caregiver's expectations of the therapeutic benefits of dementia treatments and some characteristics of the patients and the caregivers, we used the Chi-square test. Results: During the access time, 439 questionnaires were filled, and 369 were validated for inclusion in the analysis; of these, 329 also had information on caregivers. The expectations of drug treatment effects were not statistically significantly influenced by any variables considered about the patients or the caregivers. Caregivers' beliefs about the effectiveness of dementia treatment, their expectations and changes in their lives were clear. Conclusions: This study addresses a gap in knowledge about caregivers' experiences and their views of drug treatments, and highlights the need for a pharmaceutical treatment that helps to resolve the symptoms and outcomes of dementia. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

Objective. The aim of the study was to evaluate quality standards of Alzheimer Evaluation Units (EAUs) in Lombardia Region. Methods. 20 EAUs out of 81 were randomly selected in Lombardia Region. The structures were compared using some indicators built in relation to quality axis: structure, process and outcome. Results. 18 EAUs sent back the questionnaire filled up. The quantitative and comparative analysis showed a total mean value of 50% for structure indicators, 46% for process and 56% for outcome indicators. Discussion. The realization of this indicators system permitted to evaluate a representative sample of EAUs. Spreading these data to EAUs involved, it will be able to develop strategies to improve qualitative standards, to assure the best service to patients and their caregivers.
