The aim of this study was to verify the optimum temperature for germination and the effect of storage time on the emergence of Heteropteris tomentosa. The experimental design was made in randomized blocks with three replications of 100 seeds and the following temperatures: a) 5°C; b) 10°C; c) 15°C; d) 20°C; e) 25°C; f) 30°C; g) 35°C; h) 40°C and j) 45°C. The other experiment was made in a completely randomized design with five replications and the following treatments: a) freshly collected intact seeds; b) freshly collected wingless seeds c) intact seeds with 15 months of storage, d) wingless seeds with 15 months storage. Germination occurred only at temperatures of 25°C, 30°C and 35°C. The optimum temperature for seed germination was 30°C. Wingless H. tomentosa seeds stored for 15 months showed faster and concentrated emergence within the first eight days after sowing.

The Erythrina velutina Willd has a great resistance to drought, has medicinal properties and allelopathic effect; so the aim of this study was to evaluate the allelopathic activity of aqueous extract of seeds of E. velutina in different concentrations on seed germination and seedling development of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Two experiments (a standard extract obtained with water at 25 °C and the other at 100 °C) were conducted in completely randomized design with five concentrations (control - distilled water, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) with four replicates of 25 seeds. The percentage and germination speed index (IVG), percentage of normal and abnormal seedlings, shoot and root length of lettuce seedlings were evaluated. The germination percentage was low (25 and 8%) in the extraction at 25 and 100 °C respectively, when 100% concentration of the extract was used. The percentage of abnormal seedlings was high, reaching 100% at all concentrations except for the extract at 25 °C and at a concentration of 25%. The extracts from E. velutina seeds have allelopathic activity on germination and growth of lettuce.

Juca (Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. ex Tul. var. ferrea) is a tropical leguminous tree and medicinal plant used as forage in northeastern Brazil, so the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of substrates in the emergence and early growth of seedlings of C. ferrea. The experimental design was completely randomized with ten treatments, which were: S1 - sand, S2 - vermiculite, S3 - hortimix®, S4 - sand + vermiculite (1:1), S5 - sand + vermiculite (2:1), S 6 - hortimix® + sand (1:1), S7 - hortimix ® + sand (2:1), S8 - hortimix® + vermiculite (1:1), S9 - hortimix® + vermiculite (2:1) and S10 - sand + vermiculite + hortimix® (1:1:1), in four replicates of 25 seeds. The percentage of survival, percentage and index of emergence speed, height, root length and seedling dry matter were evaluated. The highest percentage of emergence occurred in substrates S1, S2, S4, S5 and S8 while the percentage of emerged seedling survival was 100% in all substrates. The greater seedling height occurred in substrates S2 and S8, respectively. The main root length and seedling dry weight occurred in the substrate S2. For the emergence tests sand substrate is recommended and for production of seedlings vermiculite.

Hyptis suaveolens (L.) Poit., is considered to be a plant of high therapeutic potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the different composition of substrates for rooting medians of Hyptis suaveolens. The study was conducted in greenhouse Sector Soil Environmental Sciences Department, Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid (UFERSA) in May 2010. The treatments were the following substrates: arisco soil (T1), sand (T2), mixture of manure and sand (2:1) (T3), a mixture of sand, arisco soil and manure (1:1:1) (T4), and mixture of arisco soil, sand and humus (1:1:1) (T5). The experimental design was a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications and 10 cuttings per plot. The evaluated characteristics were the rooting percentage, longest root length, diameter of the cuttings, dry mass of shoot and root. Substrates sand, arisco soil, and the combination of their mixture with cattle manure, stood out from other substrates in the percentage of rooting. Therefore, a combination of mixed sand, arisco soli and cattle manure is recommended for the production of seedlings of bamburral.
