An object is to provide an LED module that eliminates the need for providing electrodes between each device and allows LEDs to be arrayed with high density. An LED module includes a substrate, a first frame member, a second frame member disposed outside the first frame member, a plurality of LEDs for producing white light disposed within the first frame member, a phosphor resin disposed within the first frame member, a plurality of LEDs for producing colored light disposed between the first frame member and the second frame member, and electrodes for applying a voltage to the plurality of LEDs for producing the white light, wherein a metal wire to connect the plurality of LEDs for producing the colored light to one another is disposed so as to straddle a part of each of the electrodes.

This paper presents a commercialized dimmable electronic ballast for 1000 W metal halide (MH) lamp and its application. The ballast is a three-stage power converter. It is composed of boost converter to achive high power factor, buck converter to control lamp power, and an inverter to supply the lamp with low-frequency square-wave current. The power of 1000 W MH lamp can be varied linearly in the range from almost 65 % to 100 % with on-duty of the external control signal. Low current distortion, high efficiency of the ballast (94%), and low lamp power variation (less than 0.4%) are achieved. Furtheremore, an application of the ballast to a factory with high ceiling is demonstorated. As a result, we could achive reduction in energy consumption in the site.

The lighting device also has a detector 16 and judgment equipment 18. The detector 16 detects the driving voltage supplied from the supply circuit 14. The judgment equipment 18 instructs the control ICs to start outputting the on/off driving voltages in the order from the control IC close to the power source 2 to the control IC close to the discharge lamp 4 when the driving voltage detected by the detector 16 reaches a predetermined value during the time when the driving voltage supplied from the supply circuit 14 rises.

A lighting device has a direct-current power generation circuit, a rectangular-wave generation circuit, a pulse generating circuit, lamp-voltage detection means, and pulse-generation command means. The direct-current power generation circuit generates direct-current power from external power. The rectangular-wave generation circuit converts the direct-current power to rectangular-wave alternating-current power. The pulse generating circuit superposes high-voltage pulses on the rectangular-wave power output from the rectangular-wave generation circuit and starts a discharge lamp. The lamp-voltage detection means detects, in digital form, a lamp voltage supplied to the discharge lamp. The pulse-generation command means issues a pulse generation command to the pulse generating circuit when the value detected by the lamp-voltage detection means reaches a predetermined no-load-voltage determination level.
