An improved system for energy transfer photopolymerization which optimizes the transfer efficiency of energy from a low energy light source to a higher energy donor and then to a polymerization initiator for the polymerization of a monomer material. The energy transfer efficiency is optimized by introducing stably miscible surface treated upconverting nanocrystal donors into a monomer matrix for near infrared to blue and ultraviolet upconversion and resonantly coupling the energy stored in the donor to the initiator via Frster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET).

Disinfectant caps and packaging for use with a medical device (e.g., connector, luer access device, etc.) are disclosed herein. The disinfectant caps apply the antiseptic fluid (e.g., disinfectant) directly onto the surface of the medical device. The disinfectant cap for disinfecting a surface of a medical device comprises a cap body having a bottom wall and a sidewall extending therefrom, the sidewall defining a top opening, antiseptic fluid contained within the cap body, and a deformable top wall connected to the cap body, the top wall movable from a first position sealing the antiseptic fluid within the cap body to a second position releasing the antiseptic fluid from the cap body.

A fluid transfer system includes a transfer device coupled to a dry break coupler. The transfer device includes a valve assembly moveable between an open and a closed position. The valve assembly includes a main valve and a pilot valve. An actuator controls both the main valve and the pilot valve. A cam plate interconnects the actuator and the valve assembly. The cam plate provides a quick acting shutoff to quickly move the valve assembly to the closed position. A pivotal and rotatable connector couples the transfer device to the dry break coupler. A lock is integrated with the actuator to lock the valve assembly in the closed position.

A method and a precursor for the large-scale production of upconverting nanocrystals derived from a NaYF_(4 )host are provided. A rare earth based precursor is combined with a hydrophobic fluoride precursor, which is based upon a long-chain n-alkyl amine to form a reaction solution. The reaction solution is heated under an inert gas to temperatures above 300 C., whereby upconverting NaYF_(4)-based nanocrystals are nucleated and grown.
