A variety of over-voltages in power system with different waveforms, amplitudes and durations seriously harm the insulation of electrical equipment. This paper analyzes the waveforms of different over-voltages from the substation over-voltage on-line monitoring system, including induced lightning over-voltage, arc grounding over-voltage, and the over-voltages due to switching capacitor bank, switching unloaded overhead lines, switching unloaded transformer, and asymmetric grounding short-circuit. Through wavelet transform, the high frequency components of over-voltage are distinguished in frequency domain for feature extraction and type recognition of over-voltages.
