This paper is focused on the meaning of the locution 'scientific engineer', discussing the specificity of engineering and his method. It starts by emphasizing the essential role played by technology at the mankind genesis, just as that of engineering in the rise of the civilization. Next, the engineer's method is analyzed, discussing Simon, Vaughn Koen and Vincenti's contributions to the characterization of this method, including engineering knowledge peculiar characteristics. Once exposed engineer particular features different from those of scientist, next step is dealing with what a scientific engineer means. Finally, comments related to specific cases on control engineering are included.© 2011 CEA. Source

Folate and other B complex vitamins play important roles in the synthesis of DNA, gene expression, homocysteine detoxification and synthesis of neurotransmitters necessary for the maintenance of cognitive function. Systematic literature review of benefit and/ risks of folate and related nutrients in cognitive function in older adults. "Medline via Pubmed systematic review" of selected articles from years 2010 and May 2011 and references of the selected articles looking specifically at serum and erythrocyte folate levels, and folate intake and cognitive function in older adults. Twelve cross-sectional studies, six cohort studies and six randomized double-blind clinical studies that met pre-established criteria were selected for analysis. This review doesn't support a benefit from folic acid supplementation on cognitive function in the elderly. Whereas low folate serum levels may be related to increased risk of cognitive impairment and high levels associated with low levels of vitamin B12 can contribute a further deterioration, it is suggested as precautory measure to re-examine the present level of food fortification with folic acid to maximize benefits and limit potential risks. The objective of this paper is to study marine macroalgae as an alternative raw material for the biodiesel production. The obtained results show that biodiesel production from oil extracted from marine algae is feasible by transesterification. Oil extraction can be carried out simultaneously with the transesterification. To investigate the optimum reaction conditions, the reaction was carried out at various methanol to oil molar ratios, catalyst concentrations and reaction temperatures. The process yields 1.6-11.5% depending on the reaction conditions. Moreover, the properties of macroalgae transesterification residue after transesterification were analyzed, concluding that it is a suitable material for fuel pellets manufacturing. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Observational studies show that folate levels may be associated with the development of adenomas and colorectal cancer, suggesting that folic acid supplementation may have a preventive effect. Systematic review of scientific evidence from randomized placebo-controlled clinical studies to identify the effects of folic acid supplementation on the recurrence of colorectal adenomas. Medline via Pubmed systematic review of randomized clinical trials, double-blind and placebo-controlled and references, specifically to evaluate the effect of acid supplementation on the recurrence of colorectal adenomas. Seven randomized clinical trials that met the inclusion criteria were selected and evaluated for analysis based on pre established criteria. The selected studies do not support that folic acid supplementation is beneficial in recurrence of colorectal adenomas. We observed in some studies differences in risk by type of folate suggesting to review the criteria and levels of supplementation in some population subgroups with higher risks. Source

Objective: To study the effect o. f acupuncture at Fengchi (GB 20) on the activation of myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) in the middle meningeal artery of migraine modeled rats. Methods: Forty-four clean grade healthy female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups: the control group, blank control group, Fengchi (GB 20) acupuncture group, and Fengchi (GB 20) prevention group. Neurogenic inflammation of these rats was induced by electrical stimulation. The gamma-32P infiltration method was then used to detect MLCK activation in the middle meningeal artery, and immunocytochemistry was applied to detect the structural protein expression of MLCK. Results: The miaraine model was successfully established in the rats. Compared with the control group, MLCK activation was significantly decreased in the blank control group (P <. .01). Conclusion: The activation of MLCK in the middle meningeal artery was increased by acupuncture at Fengchi (GB 20), indicating its effectiveness in preventing and curing on acute migraine attacks. © 2016 Elsevier España, S.L.U.
