The acoustical characteristics for building insulation of five largely available plant particles (hemp shiv, sunflower bark and pith, flax shiv and rape straw) without binder were investigated. Results show that they can all be used for acoustical absorption. Measurements were then analyzed to estimate not only the sound absorption coefficient, but also the particles intrinsic properties such as porosities (i.e. total, inter- A nd intra-particles porosities) and densities (i.e. bulk and skeletal). An equivalent fluid model is then used to predict the sound absorption. From acoustical measurements, simple analytical equations allow to estimate key micro-structural parameters such as tortuosity, viscous and thermal characteristic lengths and resistivity. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Sigmoid-shaped isotherms for water vapor sorption in fuel cell membranes were analyzed with Feng's new dual-mode model for two series of ionomer systems, Nafion® 117 membranes with different counter-ions and protonated Nafion® membranes aged under different degrees of humidity. Feng's model appeared to be an excellent sorption model for these sigmoid isotherms and the values of its parameters were used for an analysis of the membrane structure/property relationships. The first model parameter, Cp, corresponds to the number of water molecules strongly sorbed in the first hydration shell of the membrane sulfonic sites. The upward curvature in the isotherms at high water activities, reflected by the A' parameter, appeared to be mainly due to the clustering of new water molecules on those of the first hydration shell. The number of water molecules per ionic site hydration depends on several structural parameters. The counter-ion of high electrostatic power attracts more water molecules per ion site, both in the first hydration shell and in subsequent sorption layers. The qualitative relationships between the membrane structure and its sorption properties obtained by analyzing the New Dual Mode Sorption (NDMS) model parameters make possible different interpretations of several data sets reported in the literature, such as the data on the sorption of different alcohols and the water sorption in Nafion® membranes during ageing. © 2013. The relationship between the physiological state of fungi and the response of their functional system to metals is not known, limiting the use of fungal enzymes as tools for assessing metal ecotoxicity in terrestrial ecosystems. The present study attempts to establish how the development phases modulate the secretion of enzymes in the filamentous fungus Trametes versicolor after exposure to Cu. For that purpose, extracellular hydrolases (acid and alkaline phosphatases, aryl-sulfatase, β-glucosidase, β-galactosidase, and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase) and oxidoreductases (laccase, manganese and lignin peroxidases) were monitored in liquid cultures for 2 weeks. Copper was added during either the growth or the stationary phases at 20 or 200 ppm. Results of the present study showed that Cu at the highest concentration modifies the secretion of enzymes, regardless of the development phase to which the fungus was exposed. However, the sensitivity of enzyme responses to Cu depended on the phase development and the type of secreted enzyme. In a general way, the production of hydrolases was decreased by Cu, whereas that of oxidoreductases was highly increased. Furthermore, lignin peroxidase was not detected in control cultures and was specifically produced in the presence of Cu. In conclusion, fungal oxidoreductases may be enzymatic biomarkers of copper exposure for ecotoxicity assessment. © 2009 SETAC. Source

To manipulate incomplete, uncertain and hypothetic information about farms, the future evaluation software in the agriculture domain will have to make computations and combine fuzzy numerical values. The approach we propose relies on combination of incomplete, uncertain and hypothetic object values based on particular application of the Dempster-Shafer evidence theory. In many research domains, studies need to be addressed in a multidisciplinary manner: each expert deals with a particular aspect of the problem. It may be useful for experts to take into account new data, share partial results, and update their own indicators and models, in order to take advantage of new measures and updated indexes in real time. For this, an easily-understandable knowledge model for any raw data source, statistical operator, indicator or business process to be available for experts, is needed. In this paper, we propose a goal-oriented meta-model, to index and reuse treatments and an extension of existing semantic Web standards to index goal-oriented services and assist and/or automate their selection. These features enable capabilities for interoperability and information exchange between three layers of knowledge: goal, domain and data layers. An application with an existing ontology of the agriculture domain and farm durability indicators will be proposed. © 2014 Springer International Publishing. Source
