This paper describes the application of Pax-18 to control the activated sludge bulking and foaming problems caused by the massive proliferation of Microthrix parvicella in biological reactor of Camp de Turia I wastewater treatment plant (Valencia, Spain). This bacterium aggravates the decanter performance and causes that the operation of all system is distorted. By means of the dosage of this inorganic reagent it is possible to remove the foam and to limit the filaments inside the floes, improving both the decantability of the activated sludge, and the nitrification, suspended solids and organic material removal performance.

This paper describes a comparative study of two filtration media, Active Filter Media (AFM) and silica sand, in a rapid gravity filtration pilot plant located in the full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Quart-Benager (Valencia, Spain). The performance in reclaimed water of both filtration media was compared in terms of suspended solid removal, turbidity removal, and faecal indicator microorganisms removal. It was concluded that at low filtration rates, the AFM can outperform silica sand in removing suspended solids and turbidity. Both filtration media exhibited low rates of faecal indicator microorganisms removal.

The study covers the use of respirometer as an auxiliar instrument to help a better understanding of the process control of the Quart-Benager WWTP. The work involves the determination of the biokinetic parameters for autotrophic microorganisms and obtaining the heterotrophic biomass yield, as well as the detection of any inhibition in the sludge activated because there were some spills. In conclusion, respirometry helps to know the status of water depuration in the WWTP.
