In one embodiment, the method comprises controlling an instantaneous current generated by a power converter that is part of an AC battery such that (i) the power converter appears, from the perspective of an AC line coupled to the power converter, as a virtual AC voltage source in series with a virtual impedance, wherein real and reactive phasor currents for the power converter are indirectly controlled by modifying amplitude and phase of a virtual AC voltage waveform that defines the virtual AC voltage source, and (ii) active power flow is prioritized while the AC battery is operating in a charge mode.

An apparatus for mounting a power electronic device to a photovoltaic (PV) module. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a mounting bracket adapted to mechanically couple the power electronic device to the backsheet of the PV module such that the power electronic device can be interchangeably positioned in a retracted position and an extended position, the extended position having an air gap between the power electronic device and the backsheet.

The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for load shedding while maintaining distributed energy resource (DER) support of a power grid. In one embodiment, the method comprises monitoring, by a load shedding device that electrically couples a power grid to each of a distributed energy resource (DER) and at least one load, a frequency of the power grid; determining whether the frequency is less than a load disconnect frequency threshold; and disconnecting, by the load shedding device when the frequency is less than the load disconnect frequency threshold, the at least one load from the power grid while maintaining the electrical connection between the DER and the power grid.

A method and apparatus for providing multi-phase power. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a cycloconverter controller for determining a charge ratio based on a reference waveform; and a cycloconverter, coupled to the cycloconverter controller and to a multi-phase AC line, for selectively coupling an alternating current to each line of the multi-phase AC line based on the charge ratio.


A method and apparatus for setting a virtual impedance ratio of a power conditioning unit (PCU). In one embodiment, the method comprises applying a disturbance to a virtual AC voltage of a power conditioning unit (PCU) operating in a virtual impedance droop control mode in which the PCU appears, from the perspective of a power grid coupled to the PCU, as a virtual AC voltage source in series with a virtual impedance; measuring the phase of the applied disturbance on the power grid; comparing the measured phase of the applied disturbance on the power grid to the phase of the disturbance; and adjusting, when the measured phase of the applied disturbance on the power grid differs from the phase of the disturbance by more than a threshold amount, a ratio of a resistive impedance of the virtual impedance to an inductive impedance of the virtual impedance.


A method and apparatus for using distributed energy resources (DERs) to detect a fire event. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving, at a controller comprising at least one processor, temperature data from at least one power conditioner of a DER; analyzing, by the controller, the temperature data with respect to at least one temperature reference; determining, by the controller and based on analyzing the temperature data with respect to the at least one temperature reference, whether a fire event exists; and when it is determined that a fire event exists, performing, by the controller, at least one action for addressing the fire event.


A method for power conversion is provided. The method includes operating an inverter in burst mode, including: (i) generating no output power by the inverter during a plurality of energy storage periods, and (ii) generating output power by the inverter during a plurality of burst periods, wherein an output current of the inverter is adjusted during each burst period of the plurality of burst periods.
