Oil spill from ships is one of the main pollution sources of inland waterways. To monitor oil spill real-time at inland waterways is of great significance for detecting and handling spilled oil on time. Based on a multi-function buoy, an oil spill monitor system is developed by integrating the oil spill monitor sensor ID-227, GPS and the sensors for monitoring temperature, water flow velocity, wind velocity, wind direction and visibility. The ZigBee network communication and information fusion technology are used to transmit and process the data from above sensors. The system being proposed can be used for real-time online monitoring of oil spills at inland waterways under all weather conditions. Finally, a framework for developing an expert system to support decision-makings during oil spill emergency is also proposed based on the above oil spill on-line monitoring system.
