An important approach for solving the world's sustainable energy challenges is the conversion of solar energy to chemical fuels. Semiconductors can be used to convert/store solar energy to chemical bonds in an energy-dense fuel. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting cells, with semiconductor electrodes, use sunlight and water to generate hydrogen. Herein, recent studies on improving the efficiency of semiconductor-based solar water-splitting devices by the introduction of surface passivation layers are reviewed. We show that passivation layers have been used as an effective strategy to improve the charge-separation and transfer processes across semiconductor-liquid interfaces, and thereby increase overall solar energy conversion efficiencies. We also summarize the demonstrated passivation effects brought by these thin layers, which include reducing charge recombination at surface states, increasing the reaction kinetics, and protecting the semiconductor from chemical corrosion. These benefits of passivation layers play a crucial role in achieving highly efficient water-splitting devices in the near future. This journal is © the Partner Organisations 2014.

An energy profiling apparatus for profiling power consumption characteristics of code being executed at an integrated circuit being powered by a power source and having a measurement module, a data processing module and a display module is disclosed. The energy profiling apparatus comprises first, second and third interfaces as well as a profile module. The first interface is configured to receive a first data set from the measurement module. The second interface is configured to receive a second data set from the data processing module. The third interface is configured to transmit a third data set to the display module. The profile module is configured to generate an energy profile of the code executed at the data processing module based on a correlation between the first data set and the second data set. Furthermore, the profile module is configured to transmit the energy profile as part of the third data set to the display module.


Various embodiments are directed to systems and methods for facilitating the aggregation of carbon reduction credits resulting from finance loans financing the purchase of energy technology. For example, a credit aggregator may receive from a finance institution estimate parameters describing a loan type. The credit aggregator may calculate a value of a carbon reduction credit associated with each loan of the loan type considering the estimate parameters and display the value to the finance institution. In addition, the credit aggregator may receive bid data and booking data from the finance institution. When a credit is booked, the credit aggregator may receive from the finance institution periodic indications of a status of the intervention technology.

A brown out detector (BOD), configured to provide a BOD reset in the event of a brown out event, is provided. The BOD includes means for tracking a reference voltage that is updated through duty cycling schemes so as to reduce power consumption, as well as means for detecting a falling flank of a supply voltage so as to optimize response times. More specifically, the BOD includes at least one track module, at least one sample module, at least one detector module and at least one comparator. The comparator is configured to compare a duty cycled tracked reference voltage with a duty cycled sampled reference voltage and to output a BOD reset if the tracked reference voltage is less than the sampled reference voltage. The comparator is further capable of exhibiting improved response times when a boost current is received. The boost current is provided by the detector module when the supply voltage falls beyond a predetermined threshold.

The precision reference module is configured to output a first reference signal while the low power reference module is configured to output a second reference signal. The output module is configured to receive the first and second reference signals and output a final reference signal. The LCD driver includes a control module, a power supply module, a reference module and a selector module. The control module is configured to output at least a clock, a first control, a second control and a third control. The power supply module is configured to receive a supply voltage and the first control, and output the supply voltage to the reference module. The reference module is configured to receive the supply voltage and the second control, and output a plurality of duty cycled and buffered reference voltages. The selector module is configured to receive the buffered reference voltages and the third control, and output one or more of the buffered reference voltages to one or more of the segments of the LCD according to a predefined sequence.

A direct peripheral interconnect (DPI) device and a method for providing a direct interconnect between peripherals are disclosed. The DPI device includes a selector configured to receive producer signals output by peripherals and control signals output by a control unit. The selector is configured to select and output one or more producer signals as an operable signal based on the received control signals. The DPI device also includes an operator having functions stored therein. The operator is configured to receive the operable signal and the control signals, and perform one or more of the functions on the operable signal based on the received control signals. The operator is configured to output a consumer signal corresponding to the operable signal, as well as a status signal providing update information to the main control unit.
