Emporia State University, often referred to as Emporia State or ESU, is a public university in Emporia, Kansas, United States, east of the Flint Hills. Established in March 1863 and originally known as the Kansas State Normal School, Emporia State is the third oldest public university in the state of Kansas. Emporia State one of the six public universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents.The university offers degrees in more than 80 courses of study through 4 colleges: the School of Business, College of Liberal Arts and science, School of Library and Information Management, and The Teachers College. The Teachers College is one of only four post–secondary institutions in the nation to be identified as an Exemplary Model Teacher Education program by Arthur Levine in his 2006 national study of teacher education programs.Emporia State's intercollegiate athletic teams are known as the Hornets with the exception of the women's teams, which are known as the Lady Hornets. Emporia State competes in NCAA Division II and is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association . An application of polyelectrolyte-enhanced ultrafiltration utilizes cationic polyelectrolytes to electrostatically bind anionic species. The colloid and target anion are then concentrated using an ultrafilter, producing a filtrate with a lower concentration of the target. This study compared the performances of poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDADMAC) for the removal of perchlorate. Potentiometric titration data revealed that the ionization properties of P4VP in aqueous solution vary as functions of titrant utilized, degree of protonation, and counterion concentration. The greater affinity of perchlorate over chloride for the protonated pyridine residues of P4VP provided up to 95.8% retention of perchlorate under the solution conditions investigated. Through ultrafiltration experiments, the effects solution pH, counterion concentration, and polymer concentration were examined for both P4VP and PDADMAC. The serials literature for 2010-11 reflects the need for all members of the serials information chain to demonstrate flexibility in the face of constant change. Both the current economic context and the rapid development of technology are providing users with more options than ever before for fulfilling their information needs. The literature reflects this and the actions that members of the serials information chain are taking to evaluate, measure, and deliver serials content in new and creative ways. The major themes in the serials literature - workflows and processes, access to serials, metrics, and changing user behavior - are described and illustrated using examples from a selection of materials published during 2010-11. Research at the nexus of operations management and information systems suggests that manufacturing plants may benefit from the utilization of information systems for collaborating and transacting with suppliers and customers. The objective of this study is to examine the extent to which value generated by information systems for collaborating versus transacting is contingent upon demand volatility. We analyze a unique dataset assembled from non-public U.S. Census Bureau data of manufacturing plants. Our findings suggest that when faced with volatile demand, plants employing information systems for collaborating with suppliers and customers experience positive and significant benefits to performance, in terms of both labor productivity and inventory turnover. In contrast, results suggest that plants employing information systems for transacting in volatile environments do not experience such benefits. Further exploratory analysis suggests that in the context of demand volatility, these two distinct dimensions of IT-based integration have differing performance implications at different stages of the production process in terms of raw-materials inventory and finished-goods inventory, but not in terms of work-in-process inventory. Taken together, our study contributes to theoretical and managerial understanding of the contingent value of information systems in volatile demand conditions in the supply chain context. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Ambient temperature may influence selection of foraging sites by organisms that use sap as a primary food source. I examined the spatial orientation of sap wells excavated by Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers (Sphyrapicus varius) on pine trees (Pinus spp.; n = 43) in eastern Kansas. Sap wells were oriented toward the southwest (ā = 246.04°, s = 65.46°, P = 0.004), unlike in previous studies. Benefits of southwesterly sap well orientation may include avoidance of high winds while foraging and increased flow of sap on the sides of trees warmed by afternoon light. © 2011 by the Wilson Ornithological Society. This paper describes how massive standardized education platforms have emerged as a result of globalization and the process of creative destruction. In education, creative destruction involves the initial development of a large number of educational standards, followed by cycles of the destruction of old standards and the creation of new ones. This leads to the narrowing and refinement of the standards until the key element of interoperability is achieved, thus allowing individuals or organizations to interact on a large scale. Examples are presented of standardized education platforms in the United States and globally. While the objective and subjective knowledge systems are represented in the field of education, one danger is that standardized platforms may become homogenized around only the objective knowledge system, which seeks perfect efficiency. This may result in the exclusion of the subjective knowledge system, which argues that diversity and heterogeneity are needed to produce educational creativity and innovation. On the other hand, the platforms may be able to deliver much needed financial efficiency for K-12 public education systems, as well as providing a connection between the research data, which remains isolated in universities, and the practitioners in K-12 settings who need it. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
