Studies have shown that an increasing dependence on advanced and engineered materials for the generation of new technologies has contributed to economic growth. Global competition results in rapid rate of technical change that involves small firms, local government, venture capital, and local universities. The Competitive Advantages of a small firm include the fact that they tend to be flexible and nimble with a flat, non-hierarchical structure that allows for easy communication among the various departments and divisions. An encouragement of powerful breakthrough technologies has resulted in bringing together the critical elements of technology such as business and finance and has encouraged the passage of local regulations that are favorable to the new technology. The Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) seeks to remove some of the barriers to innovation by encouraging academic and industry innovators to collaborate.

Steven Rodgers shares his views on the way perspectives help people in understanding the actives and developments around them in an effective manner. He states that is important for people to look for the combination of large and small forces that affect them so that they can begin to look for the measurable ways in which they impact the world around them. He suggests how perspectives can help in improving driving skills of a driver. Closer examination reveals that that the best-prepared drivers during an emergency are those who have made regular checks of the mirrors. These drivers are better prepared to make necessary course corrections at critical times by familiarizing themselves with what is behind and beside them. This can make the difference between a successful journey and a catastrophic accident.

The annual SAMPE 2012 conference was held in Baltimore, Maryland, US in May 2012. There were significant panels and keynotes that explored the future of engineered materials. There were solid technical sessions representing academic and commercial development across a wide range of technologies and disciplines. One of the significant events organized during the conference involved the docking of the SpaceX Dragon Spacecraft at the International Space Station (ISS). The Dragon Spacecraft was the first privately developed spacecraft to deliver a commercial payload to the International Space Station (ISS) under contract to NASA. The conference also focused on the art of a well-crafted Big, Hairs Audacious Goal (BHAG) that linked the events involving the docking of the SpaceX Dragon Spacecraft at the ISS and the anniversary of speech delivered by President John F. Kennedy 51 years ago at the most fundamental level.

SAMPE hosted and led the SAMPE Materials Forecast Forum in February 2011 where a team of 20 high-level technologists from different backgrounds gathered to forecast the future of the advanced materials industry. The group emphasized on elements that were expected to encourage or inhibit the future development of critical material technologies. The group emphasized on these elements instead of developing a laundry list of materials that needed to be considered for the future of the advanced materials industry. The lack of recognition within society of the critical importance of material science to technology development marketplace development by extension was the key element among those that were identified by the group. The group also expressed significant concern regarding the lack of available tools to achieve these objectives.

The most important element for achieving success in advanced material research is learning new lessons and moving forward to even greater success. Many instances occur that require reevaluating fundamental assumptions, methodology, understanding of physics, and attention to detail. The elements of Surprise in this process results in a researcher declaring an impasse and moving on to the next project. In a bid thoroughly understand the element of Surprise, one can try to recreate it and determine if it is consistent and repeatable. After the element of Surprise in understood, it can be taken into account to continue on the same pathway or use it to modify your course direction. The element of Surprise, though being simply frustrating, should not be underestimated, as it also holds an opportunity to develop bold new theories, thoughts and concepts.

These are just a few of the ways in which M&P will play an expanded role in the future of energy. There are many more and I would hope that as you think of others you would share them with me. Of course, the ultimate success of these strategies will depend upon the ability of the M&P community to provide cost-effective solutions to the manufacturing and integration of these many systems and strategies. Ultimately, the solutions must fit within an economic context to be viable. And ultimately that is the strength of SAMPE: The ability to take academic solutions to big problems and bring them to commercial viability. As we expand our collective vision to include more materials and processes, SAMPE can and will have a profound impact on the world. In the words of Dr. Wade Adams, you can "become an engineer and save the world".
