A novel three-layer composite consisting of a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) substrate, a PZT film on one side, and a film of ferromagnetic alloy on the other side is fabricated and used for studies on the nature of magneto-electric (ME) interactions. The strain mediated ME voltage under an ac magnetic excitation is compared with the voltage produced by pure piezoelectric response of the sample to an ac electric field. The ME voltage response measured across PZT substrate or PZT film under an ac magnetic field shows peaks at bending modes and longitudinal acoustic modes, with a higher voltage at bending mode than for the longitudinal acoustic mode. A variation in the bending mode frequency with bias magnetic field or electric field is observed and is attributed to variation in the Young's modulus of the magnetic or piezoelectric layers. Estimates of resonance frequencies and ME coefficients are in agreement with the data. Under an ac electric excitation, piezoelectric effects result in a resonance in the voltage measured across the PZT substrate and film. A quantitative agreement is inferred between the measured ME voltage and the voltage produced under an ac electric field. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Studies in recent years have focused mainly on strain mediated magnetoelectric (ME) effects in magnetostrictive-piezoelectric composites. This report is on resonance ME effects in a piezoelectric bimorph. The effect arises due to combination of piezoelectricity and the Ampere force on the sample that carries an ac electric current and placed in a bias magnetic field. The ME coefficient is as high as 16.5 V/(A kOe) at 153 Hz due to bending oscillations. Estimated ME coefficients are in agreement with the data. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Ceramic solid solutions on base of 0.36BiScO 3 -0.64PbTiO 3 compositions doped by additives Bi 2O 3, Ni 2O 3, MnO 2, and LiF with low melting temperatures were prepared by the solid state reaction method. Phase formation, microstructure and dielectric properties of modified ceramics were studied. Dense single phase samples characterized by the average grain size varied from submicron till tens mm were obtained at lower temperatures. Influence of additives on dielectric properties and on the effects of dielectric relaxation was revealed. © 2012 IEEE.

Influence of complex NaCl/KCl and CaCl2/KCl additives (with molar ratios 1:1 and 0.75:0.25, respectively) with low melting temperatures on structure, dielectric and polar properties of ceramic solid solutions on the base of the composition from Morphotropic Phase Boundary in the system (1-x)BiScO3 - xPbTiO3 with x = 0.645 (BSPT) was studied. Using the initial BSPT powders prepared from nitrates solutions dense single phase ceramic samples doped by the additives in amounts 5-15 w.% were obtained at 1050°C (2 h). The shift of initial BSPT composition from mixture of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases to tetragonal in case of the NaCl/KCl additives and to pseudocubic (rhombohedral) in case of the CaCl2/KCl additives was observed. Slight increase in the Curie temperature TC value from 673 to 681-679 K initiated by the addition of K+ ions into A site of perovskite lattice was observed in the samples doped by the NaCl/KCl additives, while monotonous decrease of the TC value was typical of the compositions doped by the CaCl2/KCl additives. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Ceramic solid solutions from the region of morphotropic boundary on the base of 0.36BiScO3-0.64PbTiO3, modified by complex additives of Bi2O3 and Ni2O3, Bi2O3 and MnO2, and LiF additives in amounts up to 5 w. % have been prepared by the conventional solid state reaction method. Decreasing of the phase formation temperature accompanies by increasing in density of the doped ceramics have been revealed. Ceramics with compositions close to the morphotropic boundary in the (1 - x)Bi(Sc1-yGay)O3-xPbTiO3 system were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The influence of substituting Ga3+ cations for Sc3+ cations on the structural parameters and the dielectric and piezoelectric properties was studied. It was proved that variations in the relative content of the tetragonal and rhombohedral phases depended on the tolerance-factor t value determined by the B-cation substitutions. The highest values of the piezoelectric coefficient d33 were observed in the compositions with the largest proportion of the tetragonal phase. © 2014 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The effect of the KCl additives with low melting temperature (∼1050 K), on the structural, dielectric and polar properties of 0.36BiScO3 - 0.64PbTiO3 ceramics was studied. The ceramics doped by the KCl additives were prepared by the solid state reaction method. Phase formation, polar and dielectric properties of modified ceramics were studied. Dense single phase samples doped by the KCl additives were obtained at lower temperatures in comparison with that of undoped samples. Influence of additives on dielectric properties was revealed.

Ceramic solid solutions (1-x)(Bi 0.9Nd 0.1)(Sc 0.9B 0.1)O 3 - xPbTiO 3 (x = 0.60-0.66; B - Lu, Yb, Er, Y) based on the compositions close to the morphotropic boundary, have been prepared. To improve the phase content and the resistance of ceramics, Bi 2O 3 and MnO 2 additives were used. Phase composition, structure, microstructure, phase transitions, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties have been studied. The 1st order ferroelectric phase transitions are marked by peaks near 700-750 K in dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss temperature dependences. Effect of dielectric relaxation was observed, its relation to composition of ceramics determined. The Curie temperature TC increase was observed with increasing the PbTiO 3 constituent, while the TC decrease is typical of the A- or B-cations doped compositions. Introduction of MnO 2 and/or Bi 2O 3 additives lead to the decrease of total conductivity and dielectric losses to more than one order at elevated temperatures. Influence of the NaCl/LiF additives (with ratio 60:40) on structure parameters, phase transitions and dielectric properties of solid solutions close to the Morphotropic Phase Boundary in the system (1-x)BiScO3 - xPbTiO3 (x=0.635, 0.645) has been studied. Using as initial the BSPT powders prepared from nitrate solutions, dense single phase ceramic samples doped by 5, 10 and 15 w. % of NaCl/LiF have been prepared at 1313 - 1323 K (2 h). Shift of the BSPT compositions phase content from initial mixtures of Rhombohedral and Tetragonal phases to the region of Tetragonal phase was stimulated by addition of the NaCl/LiF additives. This effect is accompanied by decrease of the unit sell volume, increase in the c/a ratio and increase in the Curie temperature value from 668 to 730 K for x=0.635 and from 672 to 724 K for x=0.645 in compositions doped by 10 w. % of the NaCl/LiF additive. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The Anisimkin Jr. (AN) acoustic plate mode having dominant and depth-independent longitudinal displacement (u1 u2, u3; u1 constant) is numerically found in tetragonal 4mm Li2B4O7 crystal with one of the low-symmetry orientations (Euler angles 89, 37, 104), as an example. The quasi-longitudinal (QL) modes with dominant and depth-dependent longitudinal displacement (u1 u2, u3; u1 constant) are experimentally detected along several propagation directions in 128y-LiNbO3 plate, where = 0, 30, 60, and 90 with respect to the x-axis. Compared with more symmetrical plate materials and orientations, the displacement profiles of the AN and QL modes in lower-symmetry counterparts are qualitatively the same, but their phase profiles are more complicated. Moreover, like any acoustic wave, all plate modes in anisotropic crystals suffer from beam steering, in general. The power flow angles of the modes propagating in a fixed direction are different and depend on the mode order n. © 2012 IEEE.
