A real-time performance monitoring system for monitoring an electric power grid. The electric power grid has a plurality of grid portions, each grid portion corresponding to one of a plurality of control areas. The real-time performance monitoring system includes a monitor computer for monitoring at least one of reliability metrics, generation metrics, transmission metrics, suppliers metrics, grid infrastructure security metrics, and markets metrics for the electric power grid. The data for metrics being monitored by the monitor computer are stored in a data base, and a visualization of the metrics is displayed on at least one display computer having a monitor. The at least one display computer in one said control area enables an operator to monitor the grid portion corresponding to a different said control area.

Computer software for Enhanced Linear State Estimator (eLSE) is a computer software for estimating the state of a power system utitilizing only synchrophasor data. The state could be the wide area power system, a footprint or even a localized system like a sub-station. The eLSE can serve as a first stage for advanced downstream applications, filter out the bad PMU data and replaces it with good ones, and extend visibility to neighboring substation. At a system level, eLSE can be used for wide area power system monitoring and situational awareness, to validate, condition and improve PMU data quality, to calculate bus angle at adjacent substation for closing transmission line and as a key application for future EMS using synchrophasor data. At the substation level, eLSE can be used for equipment health monitoring, topology error check, substation modeling for other PMU related applications like voltage/reactive power control.
