A polymerization initiator system for reactive monomers and unsaturated polymers which is contains a Group 4 transition metal or Group 4 transition metal- containing compound, peroxide or diazo compound that is capable of being reduced by the Group 4 transition metal or Group 4 transition metal-containing compound, and pinacol compound is disclosed. Further disclosed are methods for preparing the polymerization initiator and using the polymerization initiator for low temperature curing.

We report a novel approach to prepare microparticles via a dispersion polymerization using the amine-catalyzed addition of a trithiol to a triacrylate. Microparticles loaded with various core materials were produced and applied in various systems to improve the desired characteristics of the given system. We determined that this type of microparticle could be used as either a stimulated release or controlled release system for certain desired core materials. These microparticles were able to prevent the interaction between a Lewis acid initiator and fumed silica, improving the rheological properties of an epoxy system containing the initiator. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011 Microparticles containing various core materials were prepared via the octyl amine catalyzed Michael addition of trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) to trimethylolpropane triacrylate. A borontrichloride-amine complex initiator was successfully encapsualted in a thiol-acrylate matrix. The addition of these BCl 3-amine microparticles to a multifunctional epoxy resin, trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether or bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, yeilded epoxy systems in which the rheological properties were improved while the strength of the resulting polymer products were retained. Unsaturated polyester resins have been studied and modified to improve the shelf life and performance without significantly altering the base resin chemistry. Two component systems tend to have low runoff and high film build due in large part to fast gel times. These same properties can be achieved with some stable 1 component systems with no increase in cure schedule.

Provided is a flexible and self-supporting insulating film including a base support layer and a partially cured poly(amide)imide layer applied to the base support layer. The composite insulating film may be used as slot liner to provide insulation to the components of the electric motor.
