In WWTP with biological nitrogen removal, nitrification process is critical, because of the low rate of growth of bacteria responsible for nitrification process and its high sensitivity to changes in the system. In León WWTP, the different factors which depend on nitrification have been studied. It was found that the problem lay in the mud active may be a phenomenon of bioaccumulation of heavy metals entering the activated sludge plant in the biological reactor. Finally the objective focused on determining the origin of the toxic elements present in the water entering the plant so that it conducted a campaign of gauging and sampling, finding metals that exceeded the limits of inhibition to the nitrification, using a pilot plant in the laboratory.
